On this day in 1991, Duke beat UNLV 79-77 in the National Semifinal. It was the biggest upset in the history of the NCAA Tournament at the time. Vegas was undefeated at the time. Duke was led by the play of Bobby Hurley and Christian Lattener. I remember watching the game with Dad in the basement.
Five years later, Kentucky took on UMASS in a battle of #1 versus #2 in the Final Four. Kentucky was #2 at the time, however they were the better team that night. Kentucky won 81-74, behind the play of Tony Delk and Ron Mercer and the pressure defense. It was also one of the few times, that a #1 would play a #2 ranked team in the Final Four. Michigan State played Duke in Tampa in 1999, a game I was at, Illionis played North Carolina for the championship in 2005 and Florida played Ohio State in 2007. That Kentucky starting five in 1996, four of the starters got drafted by the NBA, point guard Anthony Epps was the only member of the starting five not to get drafted. I remember watching the game with Dad, my Uncle Dan and Matt Bowman and Matt Zimmerman.
On this day nine years ago, Indiana beat Oklahoma in the Final Four in one semifinal and Maryland beat Kansas in the other semifinal.
