My sports related regrets... Mulligans I wish I can have
Every week on the golf channel, David Feherty has his Feherty show and one of the questions he asks his guests, "Do you have any mulligans in your life you wish you can have"
I have not one, but two sports related mulligans I wish can have:
Growing up, I loved sports more than anything else in life. I wanted to be a sports broadcaster when I was a kid. I used to imagine myself being the next Dan Patrick, Stuart Scott, Keith Olberman, Larry Beil.
In the summer of 2001 at the age of 20, I was considering giving something else a try. I was taking a writing class in the summer and at the time i did not really care for that and as I was going through that fall semester, it was time to pick a major and I felt it was time to go in a different direction. You are 20 years old, you have your whole life in front of you, no one was saying to me, "just think about this when you are in your 30's working in a warehouse wishing you were living your childhood dream". I decided to change paths and go towards Business Management.
For the next few years, my passion for sports stayed the same. People would always say to me they think I should go into broadcasting. In the summer of 2010 while at my previous job, my co-workers thought I should have gone into broadcasting. I got the itch back to want to pursue my childhood dream.
Little did I know, Health Insurance is so significant to our every day life. There has not been a day in the last 9 years where I wish i could go back to November of 2001 to have more time to reconsider that choice.
This is my 2nd mulligan: I was 15 years old. It was a Saturday in February of 1997. My parents and I were eating dinner at Red Lobster in Piqua. My Dad was sitting across from the table from me and mid way through the dinner he asked me this question:
"How would you like to go to all the baseball stadiums". I was humbled and flattered to be asked that. I recall saying "i don't know", my Mom was was saying, "what do you mean, you don't know, you are the big sports fan". Now, one thing Dad did not say at this time was, "we would go to two cities a year for the next several years. At the time, i thought we were going to do this all in one baseball season and I did not want to spend a lot of time away from home. I turned the offer down. When you are 15 years old you don't think about things like "Just remember this in your late 30's" Do I wish i can take it back today, YES!
One thing my Mom or Dad did not say in 1997, "Just remember this in your late 30's when you want to reconsider this". Of all the baseball stadiums I have not been to that I would like to go to and I believe there are a few of them: Denver, Seattle, Phoenix, Baltimore, DC, Atlanta, San Diego, Philly, Pittsburgh. I am not crazy about the Florida Stadiums, the Texas Stadiums. The Twins and Royals, I would like to go to the NYC stadiums, but I won't lose sleep over it.
Would I have liked to go to Candlestick Park, the Kingdome, The old NYC Stadiums, Astrodome, Pro Player Stadium, yes, but it hasn't bothered me too much.
My 13 year old nephew is going to go to all the NFL Stadiums with his Dad and that made me reconsider this. I am happy for Kenny that he is doing this.
