All Decade Basketball Teams

North Carolina
Raymond Felton
Ty Lawson
Wayne Ellington
Tyler Hansbourogh
Sean May

Just think how good UNC would have been in 2006, if Sean May and Tyler Hansbourgh played on the same team. All five of these guys won a National Championship at North Carolina. I think that Ty Lawson was a better guard then Felton, but both were fun to watch. I was hoping to see Hansbourgh and May on the same team in 2005-06, but that did not happen. Hansbourgh was a beast in two NCAA tournament games at UD in 2006.

Michigan State
Paul Davis
Jason Richardson
Drew Nietzel
Raymar Morgan
Kalin Lucas

There is no better coach in the month of March, then Tom Izzo. He led them to final fours in 2001, 2005, 2009 and 2010. Drew Nietzel gets my vote over Charlie Bell due to the fact he played with a swagger and swiftness that you don’t see a left-handed point guard play with. Raymar Morgan gets my vote over Marcus Taylor, because Morgan and Lucas had two outstanding seasons together in 2009 and 2010 and Marcus Taylor only stayed at MSU for two years.

Duke
Shane Battier
JJ Redick
Kyle Singler
Jay Williams
Nolan Smith

Honorable Mention: Jon Scheyer, Carlos Boozer, Sheldon Willams, Gerald Henderson, Mike Dunleavy

Shane Battier and Jay (Jason) Williams were apart of one of the best Duke Basketball teams in the last 15 years. The duo led the Blue Devils to Coach K's third National Championship in nine years in 2001. JJ Redick, the best basketball player in the history of the Atlantic Coast Conference gets my nod or Scheyer and Dunleavy. Kyle Singler and Nolan Smith are back for more this year with Duke.

Kentucky
Patrick Patterson
Chuck Hayes
Teyshaun Prince
Keith Bogans
John Wall

Honorable Mention; Marquis Estill, Cliff Hawkins and Rajon Rondo

I choose John Wall over Rajon Rondo and Cliff Hawkins mainly because Wall was a much better athlete. Wall could shoot the three better than Rondo and Hawkins, he led the Cats to an undefeated season at Rupp in Coach Calipari’s first season. Cliff Hawkins was the point guard on a outstanding 2003 team that featured Bogans and Hayes, but I am going with Wall, because I never saw a better one and done point guard. I choose Patterson over Camara and Randolph Morris because Patterson can go outside and inside, he could play the 5 position and play the 4 spot as well. I went with Chuck Hayes over Marquis Estill, DeMarcus Cousins because Hayes was a super athlete at UK, he did the little things during his four years at UK to help the Cats win.

Ohio State
Greg Oden
Dallas Lauderdale
Ron Lewis
Evan Turner
Mike Conley
Honorable Mention; Terrance Dials, Jon Diebler, Jamar Butler, David Leighty, Dequan Cook

Conley and Oden only played one year for the Buckeyes, however they get my vote because for the all Ohio State team of the decade because of the hype they brought to Columbus. The excitement they brought to Buckeye Basketball something that was not seen the capital city in the Buckeye State. I choose Evan turner over Jamar Butler because he was so flashy, made every one around him better.

Dayton
Sean Finn
Keith Waleskowski
Chris Wright
Tony Stanley
Brian Roberts

Honorable Mention; Kurt Huelsman, Brooks Hall, Ramod Marshall, Marcus Johnson and London Warren, Chris Johnson

Sean Finn gets my vote over Kurt Huelsman in large part because Finn accomplished things at Dayton that Huelsman did not; Atlantic 10 tournament Championship, Atlantic 10 West Championship, EA Sports Maui Invitational Championship, played in the postseason all four years and also played along side Waleskowski during his 4 year Flyer Career, not to mention they had Nate Green to play along side with during their first three years at Dayton. Huelsman played with Charles Little his first three years and Devin Searcy his last three years. Chris Wright gets my vote over Brooks Hall in large part because Wright performed better in bigger games than Hall did. He had 27 against West Virginia in the Flyers first NCAA victory since 1990 in 2009, was the Chicago Tournament Challenge MOP and helped the Flyers to a NIT Championship as a junior. Hall Struggled in two NCAA Tournament games, scoring a combined 12 points against Tulsa and Purdue. I picked Tony Stanley over Marcus Johnson and Ramod Marshall, because he was a big time player, He guided Dayton to a third place finish in Maui in 2000, beat UCONN and Maryland in a three day span. Guided the Flyers to a NIT Quarterfinal Birth in 2001 and a NCAA Birth in 2000. Brian Roberts was a No-brainer at Point Guard. One of the many exciting players at UD in the Brian Gregory era, and not to mention his first recruit. Roberts led Dayton to an upset win against Pittsburgh in 2007, dropping 31 on the Panthers, a game winning three pointer against Miami in 2007, after trailing by as many as 19, two upset wins against Rick Pitino-led Louisville, dropping 20 and 28 points respectfully in those two contests. Not to menton, UD’s all time leader in three pointers made.

Lehman Catholic Boys
Justin Seger
Kevin Sargeant
Doug Westerheide
Brent Schlater
Zach Schmitz

Honorable Mention: Ryan Shaffer, Tony Riess, Mitch Rank, Jim Dembski, Adam Freytag, Kyle Corbin,

Justin Seger gets my vote at center, because for three years on the varsity squad he was our anchor in the middle. He would average 19 points and 12 rebounds a game. The latter four, were apart of two of the best teams Lehman Basketball ever had. Kevin, Doug and Brent brought excitement to our program, they guided us to 2 district championship games in three years, including a 14 game winning streak in 2007. Zach Schmitz, was a point guard on another outstanding Lehman team, one that should have gone further than it did. He was apart of a Lehman team that won more games in a season than any Lehman team ever.

Xavier University
David West
Derrick Brown
Josh Duncan
Lionel Chalmers
Drew Lavender

Honorable Mention: Justin Doleman, Justin Cage, Stanley Burrell, Romain Soto, BJ Raymond

David West; no brainer. Derrick Brown was a south-paw with outstanding range. He can go outside and he can also go inside as well. I picked Josh Duncan over Justin Dolleman in large part because Duncan was athletic and had long arms, tremendous shot blocking ability, can shoot the ball from long range as well. I picked Lionel Chalmers over Stanley Burrell because Chalmers was a sharp-shooter, had big performances in the NCAA as a senior during that magical ride to the elite eight in 2004. I picked Drew Lavender over Romain Soto, because I felt that Lavender was a better point guard. Lavender made Duncan, Burrell and Brown better in his two years at Xavier. Not to mention Lavender had a outstanding coach, Sean Miller to follow his lead.

Coaches should have attire rules for every game, not one or early season tournaments

I was watching some basketball games today and I noticed Jay Wright of Villanova and Matt Painter of Purdue out of Attire and it caught my attention. I thought coaches were supposed to wear Suits, shirts, ties, the whole nine yards.

If I was a coach or in charge of a College Basketball Program, I would have the coaches wear suits, the whole nine yards. If they played in a pre season tournament aka: Puerto Rico, Orlando, Maui, Cancun, I agree with the Coaches shirts and not the suits.

On this date 15, 10 and 5 years ago

On January 28, 1996, The Dallas Cowboys took on the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XXX in Tempe, Arizona. This was one of the most exciting games in Super Bowl History. The Cowboys jumped out to a 10-0 second quarter lead and then in the 3rd Quarter the Steelers began to mount a rally. The Games most outstanding player, Larry Brown, would have the final say, as his two second half interceptions would derail any hopes for a Steelers comeback. The Cowboys would go on to win Super Bowl XXX 27-17.

On January 28, 2001, The Baltimore Ravens took on the New York Football Giants in Super Bowl XXXV in Tampa Florida. The Ravens tenacious defense would be too much for the Giants. Ray Lewis and the Raven's Defense would lead the Ravens to a 34-7 rout of the Giants claiming their only Super Bowl Championship.

On January 28, 2006, The Dayton Flyers traveled to Cincinnati to take on the pesky Xavier Musketeers. Both teams were struggling at the time. Xavier led Dayton by two with 30 seconds left. Brian Roberts runner in the lane would come up short as the Musketeers would prevail 60-55

On this date in College Basketball, Super Bowl and Lehman Boys Basketball History

January 27, 1991, Super Bowl XXV, The New York Giants took on the Buffalo Bills. The Giants advanced to the Super Bowl by defeating the 2 time defending champion San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game. That was also the same game where Giants linebacker Leonard Marshall made the crushing hit on 49er and Hall of Fame QB Joe Montana, that would end his 49er career. The Bills advanced to the Super Bowl by defeating the Los Angeles Raiders in the AFC Title game 51-3, The Raiders defeated the Bengals the week before in the divisional round, that was also the same game that Kevin Walker made the hit on legendary sports superstar Bo Jackson, that would end his football playing days. The Giants would defeat the Bills 20-19. This game will always be remembered for two memorable moments: Whitney Houston’s wonderful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner before kickoff and Scott Norwood’s missed 47 yard Field Goal as time expired.

January 27, 1996, My Dad, Matt Zimmerman and I drove down to UD Arena, to watch the Xavier Musketeers take on the Flyers in Dayton. We met up with Casey Barhorst, a friend of Emily’s at the time, he bought tickets for me, for when I got my body cast off a month earlier. The Flyers trailed by 12 with 8:00 to go. We had to leave to get back to Sidney for the Lehman Minster basketball game ( which is going to be talked about shortly) As we got into the car, Dayton had trimmed the Xavier lead to five. The game was tied with 2:00 to go and off the bench came little used sophomore Rodney Horton. Horton would swish a three pointer to give Dayton the lead and on the next possession would make a two point basket to give Dayton a five point lead as Dayton would go on to win the 68-63. Horton would win the games most outstanding player and would etch his name into the ranks along with another Flyer player that will be talked about next month. This game was also one of the last home games at UD Arena for the Late Chris Daniels.

Later that night at Sidney High School, the Lehman Cavaliers took on the Minster Wildcats in boys basketball. After two quarters it looked like the Wildcats had buried the Cavs. As the 3rd quarter was coming to an end, Lehman was down by 22 points. Senior forward Matt Hartings, took a pass at the half court line and banked home a buzzer beater three pointer to give the Cavaliers a spark. In the fourth quarter, Lehman would make a miraculous comeback, led by seniors Kevin Geise, Jason Rosenbeck, junior Nick Koon. Lehman led the Wildcats by three late in the fourth quarter and Minster’s PJ Seiter, buried a three to tie the game. Kevin Geise would have the final answer, as he quickly raced the ball up the court and would swish a runner in the lane as time expired to give Lehman a thrilling 62-60 victory at Sidney High School.

January 27, 2001, The Duke Blue Devils were among the best in College Basketball that season. They would win their 3rd National Championship that year, but before they could do that they had to travel to Maryland to take on a pesky Terrapin team. The Terrapins would lead through out the whole game and would hold a 10 point lead with 60 seconds remaining. No lead would be safe against the 2001 Duke team. Led by Jason Williams, Shane Battier, Chris Duhon and Mike Dunleavy. The Blue Devils would storm back and tie the game and force over time. The Blue Devils would go on to win in overtime 96-94. At the end of the game, ESPN’s Mike Patrick, would say “this is the most remarkable comeback I have ever seen”. The Blue Devils and Terrapins would play three more times that year and all of them would be thrillers.

Ochocinco going back to Johnson

For the last two years, Cincinnati Bengals Wide Receiver Chad Johnson, has been called Chad Ochocinco. It is safe to say that when CJ changed his last name, it become a major distraction. He was not the player he was when he went by Chad Johnson. Chad Johnson is one of the most exciting players in the NFL and he is a joy to watch.

Packers looking to become the 3rd Lowest seed to win Super Bowl in the last five years

The Green Bay Packers are looking to do what their oppenent did in 2006, and the New York Giants did in 2008 as a #5 Seed ( I'm not as smart as I thought), and thats to win the Super Bowl as a #6 seed. The Steelers did it in 2006, by defeated the Bengals, Colts and Broncos, then beat the Seahawks in Detroit to become the first #6 seed to win the Lombardi Trophy. The New York Football Giants shocked the world in 2007, the made the playoffs as a #5 seed coming within a few plays of ending New Englands hopes of a perfect season in 2007. They would beat Tampa, before beating Division Rival Dallas in the divisional round and then ending Brett Favre's Green Bay career the following week. The Giants went in to Super Bowl XLII as heavy underdogs, but lead by linebacker Michael Strahan, Quarterback Eli Manning, Wide Receiver's Plaxico Burress, David Tyree, running back Brandon Jacob and Coach Tom Coughlin, the Giants, shocked America and defeated the heavily favored Patriots 17-14. I still can not believe that the Giants won Super Bowl XLII, however, I am happy for Eli Manning, because to me, he is no longer "Peyton's Brother", he went from being Peyton's brother, to a elite quarterback that night.

I think the Steelers will win Super Bowl XLV, it will be a good game. Mike Tomlin is a no nonsense guy and you can never underestimate a defense coached by Dick Lebeau.

Tiger and Rocco together again at Torrey Pines

For the first time since the 2008 sudden death Playoff in the US Open that captured the attention of the entire world, Tiger Woods and Rocco Mediate,  will be paired again at Torrey Pines for the Farmer Insurance Open. For those of you who do not remember Tiger beat Mediate in the 2008 US Open at Torrey Pines in a classic 18 hole playoff that last one more hole with Tiger showing the heart of a champion. I think that its great for the sport to have these two paired again.

If you guys have not read the book, Are you kidding me, please read it sometime. Its a good one.

It was about this time 15 years ago

It was about this time 15 years ago that the Holy Angels 8th grade Basketball team that was under the leadership of Ken Schlater, Mike Behr and Kevin Behr, won their first game in Junior High Basketball by trouncing Wilder in their building. Tony Henning had a big ball game for us, he was our best player, along with Ryan Ratermann, Matt Zimmerman, Jamie Westerheide, Dave Hodapp. The 1995-96 Holy Angels Boys team featured: Tony Henning, Jamie Westerheide, Justin Frantz, Ryan Ratermann, Dave Hodapp, Joe Schmeising, Todd Barhorst, Matt Bowman, Jake Sinclair, Anthony Amiewalen, Luke Schlater, Kyle Henson, Brad Graver, Beau Sweigart.  We jumped out to a quick lead and did not look back. After the game, we went to the Fairington and Jim Henning had us there for a first victory dinner.

It was the following Tuesday, that we played Milton Union at Holy Angels. The night before at practice, the coaches would have us shoot 10 free throws in groups of three. I shot 10 free throws and missed nine of them. We were getting beat pretty good and it was time for the little used guys to come in. Justin passed me the ball on the left wing and I drived baseline and their was a foul called. The guys on the bench looked at me and pointed to the foul line. I said to myself, "I'm air-balling both of these", I was thinking back to practice that night before and then said, "let's try to at least hit the back board. I banked the first foul shot in and the people behind the basket are jumping like crazy, I banked the second in as well. Moments later, I looked over at my Mom and smiled. After the game, my friends from the girls basketball team, congratulated me on the two free throws. Shortly after that, we left to go to a party at Justin Frantz's Mom and Dad's, they had us and the Piqua Catholic eighth grade boys teams over to their house for a party. The noise at the Holy Angels gym was pretty loud that night, but not as loud as Lehman's gym was on February 11, 2000.

Good Evening Everyone
