On this date in Cincinnati Professional Sports History

On this day in Bengals History…

The Bengals traveled to San Francisco on October 20, 1996. They were facing a 49er team led by HOFer Steve Young, Jerry Rice and a outstanding team. The Bengals led 21-0 in the 2nd quarter but the 49ers rallied behind the Gutsy performance by Steve Young, who was playing with a injured groin. The 49ers came back to defeat the Bengals 28-21 and two days after the game, Bengals head coach Dave Shula was fired. It was also the same game that Terrell Owens scored his first NFL Touchdown.

Shula was replaced by Offensive Coordinator Bruce Coslet, who brought a spark to the Queen City and the Bengals finished the season at 8-8.

This also marks the 21 year anniversary of the Reds last World Series Championship in 1990 as they swept the Oakland A’s in 4 straight behind MVP Jose Rijo's performance.
