Well, the Monday after Week 17 of the NFL season is always the day when Head Coaches get the AX.
Guys like Dick Lebeau (2002), Romeo Crennel (2008 and 2012), Andy Reid (2012), Lovie Smith (2012), Chan Gailey (2012)
The Buffalo Bills have not been the same franchise sense the Mid 1990's when they went to four super bowls
The Chiefs have not been the same since Dick Vermeil coached them in the mid 2000's.
The Browns have not been the same sense the 1994 season and they have only made one playoff appearance since 1999 (2002)

On this night in 2007
On this night in 2007...
The New England Patriots traveled to the Meadowlands in New Jersey to face a determined New York Giants team. The Patriots entered the game 15-0 and looked to become the first NFL team to finish the Regular Season 16-0.
This was one of the most highly anticipated week 17 games in NFL History. With the Giants already in the playoffs as a #5 seed and the Patriots already locked up the #1 seed. This was a classic.
The Patriots outlasted the Giants 38-35 as Tom Brady would break Peyton Manning's record for single season touchdown passes.
Also on this very night, The Dayton Flyers hosted the #6 ranked and undefeated Pitt Panthers. The Flyers would upset the Panther's 90-55 behind 31 points from Brian Roberts.

Bengals back in the playoffs baby. Yeah
How sweet it is that the Bengals are back in the playoffs for the 2nd straight year and doing it at the expense of there hated rival Pittsburgh. I bet the 2005 and 2006 Bengals know how the Steelers felt after yesterdays defensive struggle. That was the best defensive effort the Bengals had most likely since week 2 of the 2005 season against the Vikings.

On this day in Bengals history. A moment that will last a lifetime
On December 21, 1997, The Bengals hosted the Balitmore Ravens at Cinergy Field. With the Bengals trailing 14-9 in the 4th Quarter, Boomer Esaison performed on last great moment. He went deep and connected with Darnay Scott for 77 yards to give the Bengals a 16-14 lead. It was his last NFL pass. The Bengals finished 7-9

On this day in Bengals History
On December 14, 1997, The Bengals hosted the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys had Hall of Famer's Emmitt Smith, Michael Irvin and Troy Aikman on the team. The Cowboys jumped out to a 10-0 lead.
Early in the 2nd Quarter facing a 3rd and 1 from the Dallas 22 yard line, Bengals QB Boomer Esaison Called and audible, it was vintage Boomer, The Bengals offensive line went to the right, the Cowboys went to the left. Eric Beienmy scored on a 22 yard run to get the Bengals off and running.
Esaison would throw touchdown passes to David Dunn and Darney Scott in the 2nd Quarter as the Bengals turned a 10-0 deficit into a 24-10 lead.
Cory Dillion would add a touchdown in the 3rd Quarter as the Bengals would defeat the Cowboys 31-24. My Dad, Peter and Eli (my cousins) and I are in attendance that day.
I've been very fortunite to see some of the NFL's finest at their respective positions: Joe Montana, John Elway, Dan Marino, Brett Farve, Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, Terrel Davis, Terrel Owens, Chad Johnson, Michael Irvin, Jerry Rice, Drew Brees, Carson Palmer, Ben Roethlisberger, Jerome Bettis, Hines Ward, Ray Lewis.

On this day in 1997, The Cincinnati Bengals hosted the Tennesee Oilers (Now the Titans) on ESPN Thursday Night Football. It was a night for the ages for Rookie running back Cory Dillion. He would run for a rookie record 246 yards on 39 carries in the Bengals 41-14 Victory. Dillion would break Walter Payton's single game rushing record in October of 2000 against the Denver Broncos

On this day in Bengals history in 1997, The Bengals traveled to Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia to take on the Eagles. It was Boomer Esaison's 2nd start of the 1997 season. The previous week, he led the Bengals to a 31-26 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. It turned out to be a fun game for the fans. Boomer's counterpart in that game, former Ohio State and St. Henry High School Graduate Bobby Hoying. The Eagles won 44-42, Hoying finished with 6 touchdowns and Esaison finished with 5.

On this date in Flyer Basketball History
Dayton has beaten 3 BCS schools on this date in recent history. 1999, 2005 and 2008
1999: The Undefeated Flyers traveled to US Bank Arena to take on the Kentucky Wildcats (my favorite basketball team at the time). The Cats lead by 11 in the 2nd Half, but Dayton rallied back thanks to the clutch shooting of Tony Stanley and his 23 points as the Flyers upset the Wildcats 68-66. It was during my senior year in High School and other than Graduation, it was my classes favorite moment because they got to give me a hard time about it the remainder of our senior year
2005: The Flyers traveled to Fifth Third Arena to take on the Cincinnati Bearcats. just 48 hours removed from the Double Overtime defeat at Creighton. The Flyers jumped out and stunned the Bearcats behind the play of Brian Roberts, Monty Scott and James Cripe. The Flyers defeated the Bearcats 66-58
2008: The Flyers played in the Finals of the Chicago Invitation Challenge and they were facing the Marquette Golden Eagles. Behind the play of Chris Wright, Rob Lowery and Chris Johnson, the Flyers stunned Marquette 85-71 to win the Chicago Invitation Challenge.

Five years ago last night...
Five years ago last night, My Dad and I traveled to Columbus to see the Buckeyes take on the North Carolina Tar Heels. North Carolina was loaded with talent, Wayne Ellington, Tyler Hansbourgh, Ty Lawson, Danny Green, Marcus Gineyard. Ohio State was led by David Leighty. Jon Deibler, Evan Turner. The Tar Heels defeated the Buckeyes by eleven.
Also on that night, My Dad introduced me to former Ohio State and NFL QB Bobby Hoying. Two nights earlier in 2007, The Steelers hosted to the Dolphins on Monday Night Football. The game went into the 4th Quarter scoreless. Early in the 4th Quarter ESPN'S Mike Tirico said: "The last NFL game to go into the 4th Quarter scoreless was in 1998, A game between the Cardinals and Eagles. The Quarterbacks in that game, Jake Plummer and Bob Hoying". I asked Mr. Hoying about that game moments later and he said "I enjoyed every second of it". I remember him saying that with a smile on his face and that gave me the impression that he was and is a super cool guy. Having the opportunity to meet a former NFL QB was a awesome experience. I'll always remember that night in Columbus.

The Wolverines would go on to win the NIT Championship in April of 1997.

On this day in Bengals History
On this day in 1997, The Bengals traveled to Indianapolis to take on the winless Colts. The Bengals got a huge lift that day. In the 3rd Quarter, Jeff Blake got hurt and Boomer Esaison came in to help lead the Bengals to a 28-13 Victory over the Colts. Esaison threw for 2 scores. After the game, Bengals Coach Bruce Coslet put his foot down to any speculation to a QB controversy in the post game speech saying: "There is no Quarterback controversy, Jeff Blake is our starting Quarterback.

I think the NFL should do some reconfiguration on divisions
Ok, I think the NFL should switch the AFC North, East and South Division's around and the NFC East and South Division's around:
AFC North should be:
Cleveland
Pittsburgh
Indianapolis
Cincinnati
AFC South Should be:
Miami
Jacksonville
Houston
Tenneesee
AFC East should be:
New York
New England
Buffalo
Baltimore
NFC East Should be:
New York
Washington
Philadelphia
Carolina
NFC South Should be
New Orleans
Atlanta
Dallas
Tampa
In large part because the Colts have to travel south for there division opponents, Miami has to travel North for there division opponents, Baltimore is the furthest destination for the AFC North teams to travel, Dallas has to travel to the East to play there division opponents and I think the NFL should consider this an idea.

On this day last year, A World Series Game for the ages
On this day in 2011, The St. Louis Cardinals hosted the Texas Rangers in Game 6 of the World Series. The Rangers were up 3-2 in the Series and were leading 7-5 in the 9th Inning and were one Out and one strike away when Rookie David Freese had other ideas...
Freese hit a game tying 2 run triple to tie the game and Busch Stadium was electric. David Freese had a night that every athlete dreams of. Being at the plate, down to your last out, strike, runners on base, chance to be a hero.
Josh Hamilton hit a two run home run in the 10th inning, but St. Louis would answer in their half thanks to Lance Berkman.
The game moved into the 11th and David Freese was at the plate. 20 years and one day earlier at the Metrodome in the Twin Cities, Minnesota Twins Left Fielder Kirby Puckett took Atlanta pitcher Charlie Leibrandt to deep left center, the Late CBS and Cardinal Broadcaster Jack Buck famously said, "we'll see you tomorrow night".
Joe Buck, Jack's son, who called the game for Fox, repeated his Dad's famous phrase as Freese's drive reached the batter's eye in right centerfield. "We'll see you tomorrow night". The Cardinals won 10-9 and would win the World Series the next night.

I could not forget about this...
It's been a little over 15 years since Lehman and Versailles went head to head at Piqua's Wertz Stadium. Versailles at one time was the proud owner of a 50 game winning streak in football. Lehman came in and had not beaten Versailles since the 1991 season, then coach Chuck Asher's first season.
After a Zach Bosslet interception in the first quarter, Lehman was on the move. On 4th and Goal from the one yard line, Seth Nickol powered the ball across the goal line for the game's first touchdown. It was a defensive battle from there on.
In the fourth quarter with Lehman leading 7-0, Versailles was deep in their own territory. Facing a 2nd down from there own 14, Versallies QB Brian Philpot tried to option, but Lehman defensive ends Joe Arnold and Craig Pohl had other ideas. Pohl got to the running back and forced the Tigers to fumble the ball. Arnold scooped up the ball and took it to the house for Lehman's biggest defensive touchdown of the season and since the 1993 Season.
Lehman and Versailles would end up finished tied for the Conference and Lehman would lose in the first playoff game to Bishop Hartley 42-28.

On this day in sports history
2002: Game 6 of the World Series. The Angels rallied from a 5-0 deficit to force a game seven
1997: The Marlins hosted the Indians in Game 7 of the World Series. Al Leiter pitched for the Marlins and Jaret Wright pitched for the Indians. Tony Fernandez 3rd inning 2 run single gave the Indians a 2-0 lead. A lead that lasted until the first pitch of the 7th inning when Bobby Bonilla hit the first pitch of the Seventh Inning into the seats in right field. The Marlins would tie the game in the 9th Inning when 2nd Baseman Greg Counsell hit a Sacrifice Fly to right field to tie the game. I remember watching the game and I could not believe how loud the place got for a Sacrifice Fly. The game moved into the 11th inning and the based were loaded and Edgar Renteria would hit a walk off single to give the Marlins a 3-2 win in a Game 7 for the Ages.

Lehman Basketball History
I am a graduate of Lehman Catholic High School and one of my favorite Varsity Sports is Basketball. Lehman has had several outstanding basketball teams during the course of the last 15 years.
1998-99: After a dismal 4-17 season, things looked bright for the Cavaliers going into the summer of 1998. But in late May, Coach Henry Stolly informed the team he was resigning and heading back to Bellefontaine. A few months later, Lima native Jerry Fries was named Head Coach and he would inherit a squad that won just seven games the previous two years. That year’s squad was awesome. Lead by seniors Tommy Middleton, Kyle Goubeaux, Bryan Tobe, Eric Hewitt and Ben Kohlhorst, the Cavaliers looked to improve on two dismal seasons. Junior’s Ryan Ratermann, Sam Mikolajewski, Tony Staley, Tony Cianciolo, Jake Sinclair, Sophomores Matt Hare and Derek Orlik rounded out the roster. The Cavaliers won just one of their first four games. They went 3-3 against teams in the Shelby County league. Beat Midwest Ohio power St. Henry at home, thanks to the heroics of Tommy Middleton, Eric Hewitt and Sam Mikolajewski, Milton Union and Miami East on back to back nights and finished the regular season at 10-10. Their opponent in the tournament was Greenview. This was a game the Cavaliers should have won. The game was tied late in the fourth quarter and Greenview was in possession and hit a three to give them the lead. With 12 seconds left, Lehman cut the lead to two and The Rams missed the second of two Free Throws. Senior Bryan Tobe’s desperation three was off as time expired and the Cavaliers season ended 42-39. I have been in a lot of locker rooms in my lifetime and I will tell all of you, the Lehman Locker Room at UD Arena on this Monday night was one of the most emotional locker rooms I have ever been in. Bryan Tobe, could not sit still, he was devastated. Class of 1999, I to this day, feel so bad, that you guys did not play for a district championship. This team was better than a 10-11 team. One name I did not mention on this years squad was, Tony Henning, the best basketball player in the class of 2000. He would have started varsity as a freshmen. Tony averaged 14 points a game in jr high, playing for his Dad in Seventh Grade and My Dad in eighth grade.
2001-2002: The 2001-02 Lehman Basketball team had the look of a District Champion. This team was good. Jim Dembski, Mitch Geise, Pete Henne, Tom Hartings were the seniors on the team. Justin Seger, Andy Ratermann, Andy Malarkey and Nic Staley were the juniors and Ryan Shaffer was a sophomore. I went to a few games that year and the team started off slow, because of the late start do to the success of the football team. They started 1-5 and came a long way that season. They beat Russia at home, giving them their last loss before the state semis and they won nine of their last 13 games to close out the regular season and looked pretty good going into the tournament. They would play the Lumberjacks from Oakwood High School . The game got off to a great start for Lehman. Dembski hit a half court shot at the end of the first quarter and we were coasting along. Leading by 15 in the 4th quarter. Oakwood decided to turn their game up a notch. Lehman Scored just four points in the 4th quarter and Oakwood would make a baseline jumper at the buzzer to end Lehman’s season. This basketball team was good enough to win a District Championship and they did not. Oakwood would ride the momentum of there comeback victory and make it to the regional finals. Jerry Fries would resign from Lehman two weeks later.
2002-03: The 2002-03 Cavaliers would welcome a new coach, Mike Piatt and a new staff. The Cavaliers welcomed a talented team in Piatt’s first year at the helm. Justin Seger, Andy Malarkey, Andy Ratermann, Nic Staley and Chip Thompson were the seniors. Ryan Shaffer, Brandon Brandewie were the juniors and sophomores Mitch Rank, Derek Horstman, Ryan Debrosse and Lee Nickol rounded out the roster. Expectations for this team were very high. They wanted to have a winning season and make it to the district championship. The season did not get off to a great start for the Cavaliers. They lost their first three games, one of them to Minster in Overtime and their home opener to St. Henry by seven. I remember going to CJ Highmarks that night and I was with my cousin and my late Grandfather that night and my Grandfather told me that “they played so hard tonight and wanted so bad”. I was at practices that week and AD Jeff Uhlenhake was telling me that “I think we are going to have a heck of a basketball team this year. I maybe a football guy, but I know a thing or two about basketball to.” Lehman’s third victory of that season came at the expense of the Fairlawn Jets and Senior Justin Seger had a career night, scoring 47 points and leading the Cavaliers to a 78-73 victory. The next game out, Seger scored 37 in a victory over Wapakoneta. Lehman would win their next two games and I did not think we would lose for a couple weeks. Then came a trip to Franklin Monroe and we found ourselves down my 15 at the half and Piatt was not too thrilled. We lost the next game to Waynesfield-Goshen in double overtime and the next night hosted Xenia Christian. As the team got ready to take the floor before the start of the game, coach Piatt informed the team, “No shooting shirts, we need to play with a sense of urgency tonight, we can not afford to lose anymore games”.
We lost to SCC at UD. Beat Ada and Russia on the Raiders floor 38-37, lost to the Bob Segerson led Lima Central Catholic squad. Then inclement weather hit and our season finale got postponed for a week. We hosted Twin Valley South just 24 hours after the won their first tournament game and we beat them pretty good and won by a nice margin. Chip Thompson hit a three to get things going for us in that game. We went 8-2 at home Piatt’s first year. I got a front row seat that year. Coach Piatt asked me to be an Administrative Assistant that year and I embraced it with open arms. I had so much fun being around these guys that year and I was hoping it was going to continue. We played Clinton Massie in the first round of the tournament that year and CM was the brackets #1 seed. Things did not look good for us that night, we feel behind by 11 early and turned the ball over quite a bit. We fought back to take a one point lead and we were in possession and Lee Nickol dribbled the ball across the court and got the ball stolen away from him as I recall. We had a chance to tie the game late, Ryan Shaffer’s three point attempt from the right wing with 33 seconds left, looked good from where everyone was sitting. It rattled out. Ryan hits that three and we force overtime, we probably win that game. Clinton Massie went on to win by a four point margin. Justin Seger, was held without a point, but did have 15 rebounds in that game. I was in the locker room that night and there were some heavy emotions on the face of the seniors. I felt so bad for those guys. The 2002-03 basketball team was good enough to win a district championship and they did not. They were way better than the 10-11 record they had
On October 18, 2012, I was thinking about this during the day at work. I was thinking who would win if Jerry Fries first Lehman Team played Mike Piatt’s first Lehman team: Here are the starting fives from both squads:
1998-99
§ Ryan Ratermann
§ Sam Mikolajewski
§ Tony Staley
§ Tom Middleton
§ Tony Cianciolo
Bench
§ Eric Hewitt
§ Ben Kohlhorst
§ Jake Sinclair
§ Kyle Goubeaux
§ Bryan Tobe
§ Matt Hare
§ Derek Orlik
2002-03
§ Justin Seger
§ Andy Ratermann
§ Nic Staley
§ Ryan Shaffer
§ Andy Malarkey
Bench
§ Ryan Debrosse
§ Brandon Brandewie
§ Lee Nickol
§ Chip Thompson
The 1998-99 Lehman Boys Basketball Team had way more depth, more big’s and perimeter guys. They had guys who could play any position. Justin was a better player than Sam was, Tony S was better than Nic, Tony C was better than Andy. I think the 1998-99 team beats the 2002-03 team by 15-20 points, easily.
2006-07: Mike Piatt’s best team and Lehman’s best team since 1994-95, Henry Stolly’s first season. Two of their five seniors played in a district final as sophomores. Coming off a 11-10 season where they started 1-8 and won 10 of their last twelve games, losing to eventual Regional Finalist Houston in the first round of the tournament. Four senior starters, Tony Riess, Brent Schlater, Kevin Sargeant, Doug Westerheide and a sophomore Zac Schmitz. Tyler Cianciolo, Spencer Peltier Dayon Pearson and Collin Kinsella rounded off the bench for the Cavaliers. They started off 4-4 and then won their next 14. They beat Anna, Fort Loramie , Botkins, Triad, Troy Christian, Jackson Center , Houston , Marion Local. This was a team on a mission. They had the look of a state champion. They made it to the district final and went up against Cincinnati Lockland. Things looked great for the Cavaliers. They led at the half by seven and at the end of three by fourteen thanks to a buzzer beater by Brent Schlater.
Lehman had been plagued by blowing double digit leads in tournament games in the past and history came back to bite them once again on this night. Lockland trimmed the lead to nine by the time the Cavaliers got the ball to their side of the court. Lockland took advantage of Lehman mistakes in the fourth quarter. Tony Riess missed a driving layup with 1:30 left that would have put us up by six and put the game out of reach. Kevin Sargeant had two free throws to put us up three with 20 seconds left made one missed one. Lockland missed a shot and made a putback to tie the game. Spencer Peltier missed a three from the top of the key and Spencer was a fine athlete, good kid and all however I still question that shot and play drawn up at the end of regulation. Kevin Sargeant was open on one wing and Zac was open on the other. The game went into overtime and we were history. Lockland scored the first four points and we were done. A month later, Mike Piatt was relived of his duties as Lehman Head Coach.
2008-09: The 2008-09 Lehman Basketball team was tabbed District Championship or Bust prior to the season. Six seniors, five of whom went Undefeated in Junior High; Zac Schmitz, Dan Westerheide, Nathan Horstman, Max Cartwright and Brian Adams and Piqua native Corbin Peltier. David Freytag, David Spearman, Ross Moore, Caleb Goins and Jon Slagle Rounded out the roster. The team went undefeated at home. Won the Buckeye Insurance Tournament Championship in Piqua and earned the #1 seed in the Piqua Sectional. After Struggling against Triad in the opener, Lehman blitzed Botkins in the semis and set up a date with Mechanicsburg in the Sectional Championship. Lehman raced past the Indians to head back to UD Arena for their 3rd district championship game in five years. The Cavaliers took on Summit Country Day in the District Final and fell short of their goal losing 53-50.

On this day in 2002; The Greatest High School football Game I ever saw
The best High School football Game I ever Saw
On October 18, 2002, The Lehman Cavaliers hosted the Marion Local Flyers at Juila Lamb Stadium. The Cavaliers were coming off a tough defeat the previous week at Chaminade Juilenne and needed to beat the Flyers to make the playoffs for the Second Straight year under Second Year Head Coach and former NFL Center Jeff Uhlenhake. Things looked bleak for Lehman, The Flyers came out and scored the first 21 points of the night. The Senior-laden Cavaliers would not quit. Lead by Justin Seger, Jack Haas, Josh Schachner, Andy Ratermann, Tim Badgett, Adam Cisco, Marc Palmer, the Cavaliers reeled off 32 unanswered to turn a 21 point deficit into a 32-21 lead. The crowd at Juila Lamb was Electric. This was turning into a classic. Both teams left it all out on the field. Marion Local would fight back and take a 33-32 lead late in the fourth quarter. With Two minutes to go, Seger drove the Cavaliers down to the Marion 24 yard line. With 25 seconds left and the Cavaliers facing a 2nd down, time out was called and the Seger lined up to kick a field goal. The field goal looked good from where we stood, but the official said it was no good.
Lehman Class of 2003-2006, I am so proud of how hard all of you competed on the night of October 18, 2002. Especially proud of the seniors for how hard you competed and represented Lehman’s football team and program in the biggest game of your season and of your football lives. To this day, I have never seen a football team play so hard. I remember going to a party at Seger’s that night and gave Justin a hug and told him good game. Justin was to me one of the best all around athletes of the 2000’s at Lehman. Jim Dembski, Zach Schmitz, were a couple, but Justin was a superior athlete.

On this night in Baseball History
On October 14, 2003, the Chicago Cubs took on the Florida Marlins in Game 6 of the NLCS. The Cubs were ahead 3-2 in the series and lead 3-0 in the Top of the eighth inning. With One out and Louis Castillo at the plate, things turned upside down for the home team.
Catillo hit a ball down the left field line and Steve Bartman took a stab at it and missed it. The friendly confines turned ugly. The Cubs fell apart and lost 8-3 and would lose Game 7.

Congrats Reds on an outstanding season
Well, the Reds season ended Thursday at the hands of the San Francisco Giants. It was a great year for Baseball's oldest Franchise. Although, they came up short in the NLDS, there are alot of Reds fans, even me who are very proud of the team that won 97 games. I am hoping Scott Rolen will come back for at least one more year, he has meant the world to the Reds since they traded for him in 2009 and I am hoping Dusty will be back as well.

Congrats to Homer Bailey
Last night, Homer Bailey pitched his greatest game for the Cincinnati Reds. A no-hitter. I remember his first start with the Reds like it was yesterday, June 8, 2007 against the Cleveland Indians. He pitched 5 innings and got out of the fifth inning with striking out a batter with two runners on. Ken Griffey and Adam Dunn hit Home Runs in the latter innings to give Bailey his first career victory. Well done last night Homer. Keep up the good work Red-legs.

I remember the last time the Reds Clinched on a Friday and where I was at
The last time the Reds Clinched the Division on a Friday Night was in 1995. They played the Phillies at the Vet in Philly. Trailing 2-1 in the top of the ninth, Bret Boone came up and hit a game winning 2 Run Double to give the Reds a 3-2 victory. I remember watching the Final 2 Innings at a Applebee's in Springfield with Matt Zimmerman, Jamie Westerheide, My Dad and Tom Middleton. Ron Gant made a game saving catch in the left field corner to preserve the win.
Twenty Years and 7 Days ago. A first in the NFL
A game for the ages in the NFL and a first
In week two of the 1992 NFL Season, the San Francisco 49ers hosted the Buffalo Bills. The Bills were coming off back to back Super Bowl defeats, while the 49ers were coming off a non playoff season. Both teams were stocked with Hall of Famers. Steve Young, Jerry Rice, Jim Kelly, Bruce Smith, Thurman Thomas, Bill Romanowski. The Bills would go on to defeat the 49ers 34-31. It would be the first game in NFL History that did not have a punt. The Bills would go on to the Super Bowl, losing to the Dallas Cowboys. The 49ers made it to the NFC Championship game losing to the Dallas Cowboys.

One game does not make a season
There is a saying, "one game does not make a season", just ask the 2007 Bengals, Browns, 2009 Bengals.
The Bengals beat the Ravens Five years ago on Monday Night. Forcing seven turnovers and winning 27-20. They would lose there next five games and finish 7-9.
The Browns laid an egg against Pittsburgh in Mike Tomlin's first NFL game and then had a great season, going 10-6
The 2009 Bengals lost a heartbreaker to the Broncos, thanks to the heroics of one Brandon Stockley and finished 10-6 and won the division.
The Ravens played like a team on a mission last night. They played with a chip on their shoulder and looked like a team that wanted to go to the Super Bowl. Ray Lewis is a awesome player, I enjoy watching him play.

Inaugural Soup Kitchen Scramble was a great success
The Inaugural Holy Angels Soup Kitchen Scramble was held on August 26 at Shelby Oaks. Co-Chairmen Luke Schlater and Joe Wiseman had a field of 72 golfers and 18 teams, which exceeded both of our expectations for the Inaugural event. We helped raise a significant amount of $$ for the soup kitchen. The top 3 teams who won prize $$, all donated their money towards the soup kitchen. It's early September and Joe and I are already getting some interest about next years scramble, something I do not want to think about until probably May of 2013
Would love to see a D4: The Mighty Ducks Reunion
I watched D2: The Mighty Ducks, the last 30 minutes of it this weekend and I know its been fifteen years since the last Mighty Ducks Film came out. I think it would be super cool to see a D4: The Mighty Ducks reunion. To get this group back together on the big screen for a fourth time would be neat. Joshua Jackson's character in the 3 movies was awesome, he kept that group together and with him and Emilo Estevez, those 3 movies were a huge success.

About this time 20 years ago... Braves take over the NL West
It was this time in 1992, The Reds were playing good ball, but their nemicious, the Atlanta Braves were about to catch them and did by the time late July came around. With the Starting Rotation of Tom Glavine, John Smoltz and Steve Avery, the Braves took off and never looked back. Bream/Hunter, Lemke, Blauser, Pendelton, Gant, Nixon/Sanders, Justice, with Greg Olson and Damon Berryhill behind the plate, rounded the defense, this team was stacked. They would win their 2nd straight divison title, and make it to the World Series, bowing out to the Toronto Blue Jays in the World Series 4-2.

On this night in 1997, Michael Jordan's "flu game"
On this night in 1997, Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls took on Karl Malone and the Utah Jazz in Game 5 of the 1997 NBA Finals. It was one of MJ's best games of his career. Jordan was striken with the flu and had a couragous performance. He scored 38 points, hitting the go ahead 3 pointer with 30 seconds to go leading the Bulls to a 90-88 win en route to their five NBA Championship.

On this night in Detroit Sports History... 50 years of misery comes to an end
I am not a hockey fan or guru, but I have a lot of family who lives in Michigan and they are die-hard Detroit Red Wings Fans and I know they will enjoy reading this piece.
On this day in 1997, The Detroit Red Wings were one win away from winning their first Stanley Cup in 50 years. Standing in their way was Eric Lindros and the Philadelphia Flyers. The Red Wings jumped out to a 3-0 series lead thanks to Goalie Mike Vernon, Steve Yzerman, Darrin McCarty, Sergi Federov. The Red Wings would defeat the Flyers 2-1, ending a 50 year draught. The Red Wings have won 3 Stanley Cups since 1997. It was a great scene at a family wedding reception in Dearborn, Michigan

Stockton Sends Jazz to first finals: 15 years ago tonight
On this night in 1997, The Utah Jazz were playing the Houston Rockets at the Compaq Center in Houston in Game Six of the Western Conference Finals. The Jazz came in leading the series 3-2 after a hard fought physical Game five which the Jazz beat the Rockets 95-90. The Rockets had a 100-92 lead with 2:30 left. John Stockton scored the next 8 points. After a Rocket miss, the Jazz called for time. John Stockton hit a three point from the left of the top of the key to send the Jazz to their first finals.

NBA Playoff Moments of the last 20 years
I've been a basketball fan my entire life and I have seen some outstanding playoff moments over the years. The Celtics sweeping the Pacers in 1992, thanks to the heroics of Point Guard Jeff Bagley in Game 2. The Knicks and Bulls going to seven games in 1992, one of two times Michael Jordan would ever play in a Game 7 in his six year title run. The Bullets (now the Wizards) giving the Bulls all the can handle in a hard fought 3 game series in 1997, the Knicks and Heat starting a four year playoff run in 1997, with "the fight" in Game 5. It's been twenty years since Larry Bird last played. John Stockton sending the Jazz to their first NBA Finals. The Celtics making the Eastern Finals in 2002, under the leadership of former UD Coach Jim O'Brien. The Lakers and Kings playing in a seven game series for the Ages in 2002. The Golden State Warriors pulling off the biggest upset in the history of the NBA Playoffs, defeating the defending Western Conference Champion Dallas Mavericks in 2007. Lebron James leading the Cleveland Cavaliers to the NBA Finals in 2007.

Luke's surprise teams from 2011-12 seasons
I am a die-hard Cincinnati Bengals fan as most of you know. This year, people were comparing the Bengals to the 2007 Miami Dolphins and 2008 Detroit Lions. The Bengals surprised everyone this year. Led by Andy Dalton, AJ Green and Jerome Simpson, the Bengals finished 9-7 and made the playoffs as a 6 seed. If you would have told me before last years NFL season that the Cincinnat Bengals would have entered Week 17 with something to play for, a meaningful game or a chance to go to the playoffs, I would have LMAO.
Another Cincinnati team that surprised me, was the Xavier Musketeers. This team was primed for a big year. Tu Holloway, Mark Lyons, Kenny Frease, they were stocked with talent. Then came the Cincinnati game and we all know what happened. The Flyers arch-rival began to self-destruct. Chris Mack rallied his team. The Musketeers made the A 10 Championship game as the 3 seed for the first time since the days of Stanley Burrell, Josh Duncan, Justin Doleman, Justin Cage and then Head Coach Sean Miller ( who was in his second season). The Musketeers were beaten by a surprising St. Bona team led by Andrew Nicholson. Xavier made the tournament as a 10 seed beating Notre Dame, Leigh before bowing out to 3rd seed Baylor.
As a die-hard UD fan, I was happy for Xavier that they made it as far as they did, considering what they went through. They may have had guys on the team who acted like they were bigger than the game itself (to me, that is true) but Xavier is a first class basketball program and Chris Mack is a outstanding Coach and did a awesome job with this years Xavier squad.
My favorite College Bball team, Dayton had a good season, considering what they had. First year for a new coach, new system. Won the Old Spice tournament, beat the likes of Alabama, Ole Miss, Minnesota, Wake Forest, Xavier by 15, Temple on their home court. I'm gonna miss Chris Johnson, Paul Williams, Luke Fabriuzus and Josh Parker.

Today is a great day to be a UD bball fan
I was just reading the Dayton Daily News online and saw that Xavier guard Mark Lyons, who like his back court mate Tu Holloway, were Dayton killers this year, will not be returning for his senior season. Lyons has finished school one year early.
As a Die-hard UD fan, I have a lot of respect for XU as a program. I just did not like how this years Xavier's squad acted.

What a Sunday at Augusta.
What a Sunday at a Augusta. It all started on the Par 5 on Louis Osstethisun's 2nd shot, double eagle. He would be in the lead for the next 2 hours. Guys like Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson, Matt Kuchar would all try to make a run. Mickelson missed the green on 4 way left. Kuchar barely missed eagle on 13, but then birdied the hole and then Eagled the 15th to tie the lead. Osstethisun regained the lead shortly there after. Then as Watson and Louis were on the Par 3 16th, Watson birdied the 16th and the second to last foursome would be tied. It would go into a sudden death playoff, like every Major Golf tournament should be. Watson then hit a shot for the ages on the second sudden death hole from the right side of the fairway. He would par the hole and win his first green jacket and major. Well done Bubba.

This is Kentucky's best team since 1996
To me, this is Kentucky's best team since 1996. Rick Pitino was the Head Coach. Their Starting Five was Antoine Walker, Derek Anderson, Walter McCarty, Anthony Epps and Tony Delk. Four of the five got drafted by the NBA. They swept the SEC and won the National Championship by beating Syracuse in the Final, thanks to Tony Delk's 24 points and 7 three pointers and 20 points from Ron Mercer.
The 2003 team was good as well. Keith Bogans, Jules Camera, Marquis Estill, Cliff Hawkins and Gerald Fitch. That team was spectacular on the defensive end. Bogans was the SEC player of the year and that team swept the SEC, won the tournament championship at the Superdome. In the regional semi against Wisconsin, there season turned upside down, Keith Bogans sprained his ankle and waiting for them in the regional final was Dwayne Wade and Marquette, who bounced Kentucky from the Tournament and advanced to the final four.
Seven years and two head coaches later, John Calipari came to Lexington. He brought a new attitude and a Pitino like style. He has recruited relentlessly in the three years he has been there. John Wall, Brandon Knight and Marcus Teague. I like how Calipari has brought a new way of winning to Lexington. Kentucky fans have waited fourteen years for this moment. This is Kentucky's time. GO BIG BLUE.

It's Masters Week
How Sweet must it be for 3 of Golfs Greatest Champions and finest Gentlemen to be the honorary starters at the Masters:
Gary Player Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer
I am very excited about this week. I think its going to be an exciting tournament and here are my top five:
Phil Mickelson
Tiger Woods
Rory McIlory
Grahme McDowell
Bubba Watson
Tiger is due for a Major. He was right there a year ago, but missed an Eagle putt on #14 and a birdie putt on #16 that would have put him in the lead
I can also see Rory make a charge as well.

20 years ago tonight... The Fab Five is going to the Final Four
On this night in 1992, The Ohio State Buckeyes took on the Michigan Wolverines. The Buckeyes were led by Jim Jackson, Lawerence Funderburke, Chris Jent, Mark Baker, Alex Brown.
The Wolverines were led by of course the Fab Five: Jalen Rose, Chris Webber, Juwan Howard, Ray Jackson and Jimmy King.
The game was a tight one. It would come down to a fina possession in Regulation. Chris Jent missed a baseline leaner that would have won it, but it missed as the game moved into overtime.
Michigan would prove to be too much in the extra frame. As the Wolverines outlasted the Buckeyes 76-72 and ended the College Careers of Jim Jackson, Chris Jent, Mark Baker and Alex Brown.

Its hard for me to believe...
It's hard for me to believe that US Bank Arena, formerly called Riverfront Coliseum, The Crown and The First Star Center, has not hosted a Men's NCAA Tournament Game in twenty years. With the success of Xavier University Basketball, that could very well bring the NCAA tournament back to the Queen City. In March of 1992, Riverfront Coliseum hosted the first and second round games of the NCAA Tournment. Ohio State, North Carolina, Alabama, UCONN and Miami University all played there. The second round featured games between North Carolina, led my Eric Montross, Hubert Davis, George Lynch and Alabama In the other game, Ohio State would was led by Legend Jim Jackson, Chris Jent, Lawerence Funderburke, Mark Baker and the Buckeyes defeated UCONN by a significant margin. Yes, I remember the floor that was Red with white Cincinnati letters on the end lines on both ends of the court and it said Riverfront Coliseum in small black letters on both sides of the half court circle.
Kentucky used to play a home game a year from 1998-2008, a 10 year contract. The lone loss, Dayton 68-66 in 1999.

On this day in 2007, Ohio State, which was led by Freshmen sensations: Mike Conley, Greg Oden, David Leighty and Dequan Cook, along with junior Jamar Butler and Senior Ron Lewis took on Xavier, which was led by Seniors Justin Doleman, Justin Cage, Juniors Josh Duncan, Stanley Burrell and Drew Lavender. The Musketeers led by 9 with less than 3 minutes to go. No lead was safe against the 2007 Buckeyes, who were playing their 4th game at Rupp Arena since the 1992 NCAA Tournament. The Buckeyes railed and trailed by 2 with 9 seconds left. Xavier senior Justin Cage made one of two free throws to set up Ron Lewis' game tying three.
Ohio State would go on to win in Overtime 78-71, ending the careers of Justin Doleman, Justin Cage and the Xavier career of backup point guard St. Xavier Grad Johnny Wolf.

Xavier does it; AGAIN
Well, Xavier did it again to us ( The Flyers) again tonight in Atlantic City. Tu Holloway and Mark Lyons are the best thing to happen to Xavier since David West. I can't feel bad for the Flyers, after self destructing a significant lead for the 2nd time in 3 years in AC, although losing tonights game makes me think back to five years ago tonight...
Lehman played Lockland in the District Final and had a 14 point lead at the end of the 3rd Quarter. By the time they got the ball past half court in the 4th quarter, Lockland trimed the lead to 9. I still feel for Doug Westerheide, Brent Schlater, Tony Reiss, Kevin Sargeant and Collin Kinsella. I still can't believe that Lehman lost that district final five years ago.

10 years ago tonight, A thriller at Lehman Catholic
On this night in 2002, the Lehman Cavaliers hosted the Russia Raiders or as former Coach Jerry Fries liked to call them "the Frogs". It was about this time 10 years ago that Lehman hosted Ft. Loramie in Boys Basketball. Lehman was without suspended Guard Jimmy Dembski. Lehman was lead by Justin Seger, Mitch Geise, Nic Staley. The Game went into Overtime as Lehman defeated Loramie by 1 point thanks to two Nic Staley Free Throws.
That same night in Gainsville, Florida hosted Kentucky. Kentucky was coming off a tough home loss to Alabama (a game I was at). Kentucky was up one late and Keith Bogans, who was having a below subpar season drilled a 3 from the right elbow to put Kentucky up four. Tubby Smith went nuts on the sideline. Kentucky would go on to win by 3.

I think it would be pretty neat to see this...
I think it would be super cool to see things like this:
- A Celtics Vs Lakers Game on a Neutral Court to break the All Time Record for Attendance at a Basketball Game. The two most storied franchise's in NBA history playing on a Neutral Court would be pretty cool.
- A Flag Football Alumni Game featuring rivals like the 49ers vs Cowboys, Steelers vs Cowboys, Steelers vs Ravens, Bills vs Cowboys, Bills vs Dolphins, Giants vs Cowboys.

All-Star games are "overrated"
I feel that All Star games are overrated. I was just watching the NFL Pro Bowl and there is no defense being played, its all about Offense. If you are going to have something to play for, play for the winning conference being the Home team in the Super Bowl regardless of the seed.
Basketball is the same way, there is no defense, just offense. Play for something like Home Court advantage in the NBA Finals.
Baseball has done great with their All Star Game having the winning League getting the Home Field Advantage in the World Series.

Could it be the start of a great year for Tiger
Well, if finishing 2 shots back in the Abi Tournament is any indication, I have a feeling its going to be a great year for Tiger Woods. The man is due for success in tournaments. He finished tied for 4th in The Masters in the last two years, last year he flirted with the lead in the final round, along with eight other golfers. I would like to see the greatest Golfer of our generation do well again.

On this day in 2006... Xavier gets by a fiesty Dayton team
On this day in 2006, Xavier hosted Dayton in a Atantic 10 showdown at the Cintas Center. Both teams were having average seasons. Xavier was lead by juniors Justin Doleman, Justin Cage and Senior Dedrick Finn. Dayton was lead by Junior Monty Scott, Sophomores Brian Roberts and Norman Plummer.
Dayton was down two with 28 seconds left. Roberts drove down the middle of the lane and missed a runner that would have tied the game. Xavier would go on to beat the Flyers 60-55.
Xavier has beaten the Flyers the last 26 times the two teams have squared off over the last 31 years they have played in the Queen City. If the last two years are any indication ( both four point Xavier Victories), Dayton could end the draught in the Queen City. I remember sitting at Bdubbs in Sidney last year watching the game at Cincinnati and Chris Johnson hit a 3 with less then 3 minutes to go to give UD a 2 point lead. I then texted my friends that night and said, "c'mon one time". However it was not in the cards. Paul Williams missed a 3 from the right corner wih 7 seconds left and Kenny Frease blocked Matt Kavanaugh's put back to preserve Xaviers win. One of these years, UD is going to end the draught, I can sense it.

Dayton and Xavier: Not just Rivals, but two First Class programs
I was at the Dayton Xavier game and I have the sense that these two proud programs respect one another. Xavier missed a shot with 35 seconds left in regulation and Dayton did not take another shot, they held the ball outside the top of the key and as time expired, guys like Mark Lyons, Tu Holloway, Brad Redford and Kenny Frease patted the Dayton players on the back, shook their hands and congratulated the Flyers on an outstanding win. I had the notion that these two programs respect one another.
Two years ago, in the quarterfinal round of the Atlantic 10 tournament, Xavier had a 2 point lead late and Rob Lowery was trying to call for time, until Tu Holloway hit the ball out of his hands and Lowery got "fiesty" and hit Holloway back and it resulted in a Technical Foul.
One of my favorite moments of this rivalry occurred prior to the 2007 game at UD. Prior to tip off, Xavier's Justin Cage walked to the end of the Dayton bench and shook the hand of Dayton Senior Forward Monty Scott, who was out for the year with a torn ACL. When I saw Cage do that, I got a little choked up because here's a guy who could not participate in the game and one of the players from your arch rival comes over to your bench and shakes your hand and I thought that was a awesome gesture on Cage's part.

Dayton Flyers; what a fun exciting team to watch
I've been a "die-hard" UD fan for about 8 years know and I will tell you, I don't think I have seen a more exciting team then this years. The 2009 and 2010 teams were fun, but I got to give this years squad a bit of an edge. They are fun to watch. Dillard, Kavanaugh, Parker, are a joy to watch. I am excited for what this team will do come March.
Ray Lewis- One Classy Man
I just saw Shannon Sharpe's interview with future Hall of Famer Ray Lewis on TV moments ago and I got to say this is a classy man. Plays every game and play with 110%, plays with passion, heart and gives a 110% every single season. Lewis is 36, but plays like he's 23. I admire that from him.

It's Xavier Week: GO DAYTON FLYERS
It's Xavier week for my favorite College Basketball team. Xavier was supposed to be the team to beat in the A 10 this year and could very well be right there in the end, just like the Flyers were in 2010, but we all know that did not happen. I think the Flyers will come out on top and Matt Kavanaugh will have a good game, Kevin Dillard will have a good game. The place is going to be electric, just like 2005 when Marques Bennett had his 15 minutes of fame and scored the biggest 5 points of his Flyer Career. I think it will be another outstanding game between two outstanding Rivals. GO FLYERS.

Six years ago today
The Pittsburgh Steelers invaded Indianapolis and the RCA Dome on January 15, 2006. The Colts were coming in as the #1 seed in the AFC and the Steelers were coming off a 31-17 victory over the Bengals.
The Steelers jumped out to an early lead. Late in the 4th Quarter, the Colts had the ball deep in there own territory. Peyton Manning got sacked on a 4th down setting the stage for two memorable moments. On 1st and Goal from the 2, the Steelers gave the ball to Jerome Bettis, who was hit hard at the one yard line and caughed up the football. Indy's Nick Harper grabbed the ball out of the air and looked like he was going all the way, but Ben Roethlisberger would save the Steelers season and Bettis' Career. Roethlisberger would make a shoe string tackle at the Colts 45 yard line. The Colts moved the ball into Steelers territory and Mike Vanderjadt would miss from 38 yards out that would have tied the game.

10 years ago tonight... A thriller at Anna High School
On this night in 2002, Anna hosted Lehman in Boys Basketball. Lehman was led by seniors Mitch Geise, Tom Hartings, Pete Henne, Jim Dembski and Junior Justin Seger. The Cavaliers jumped out to a significant lead in the 2nd quarter, but that would be erased.
In the 3rd Quarter, Anna Senior Jason Banks caught fire. He drilled 3 pointer after 3 pointer. No one could stop him. Banks would make 11 triples on the night. Trailing by 3 late, Lehman Senior Pete Henne drilled a 3 from the right wing to tie the game and force overtime. Banks would continue his amazing night in Overtime and with the game tied late, Anna would win on a put back lay-up 94-92. Banks would finish with 44 points.

On this day in 2006... Carson Palmer's career turns upside down
On this day in 2006, The Cincinnati Bengals hosted the Pittsburgh Steelers in the WildCard round of the NFL Playoffs. It was an electric atmosphere at Paul Brown Stadium. The Bengals fan were geared up for their first postseason game since the 1990 season and Cincinnati Pro Sports First Playoff Game since Game 2 of the 1995 NLCS.
On the Bengals 2nd Offensive Play from Scrimmage the Bengals season would turn upside down. Carson Palmer tore his Left ACL and the Steelers would go on to a 31-17 victory in route to winning Super Bowl XL

Would love to see the NBA played Outdoors
I love how the NHL plays a game outdoors on New Years. I think it would be super to see the NBA do something like that in Warmer Weather Markets: Los Angeles, Phoenix, Orlando, Miami, Dallas, Houston. I think it would be pretty neat to see the NBA play a Basketball game outdoors.

Bengals are headed to the Playoffs. Great day to be a Bengals Fan
Who would have thought before the season began that the Cincinnati Bengals would have won 9 games. I did not think they would have won 5 games all year. Especially with Carson Palmer, Chad Ocho Cinco gone. Head Coach Marvin Lewis made this team believe. They beat Cleveland in the first game of the season and gave Denver all they can handle in week 2. I thought they were going to have a "dismal" year. Not so fast...
The Bengals trailed the Bills in the 4th quarter by a Touchdown and Andy Dalton took over. Dalton led the Bengals to a 20-17 comeback win. That would set the tone for a Magical Season in the Queen City. Andy Dalton is a good QB. I have really been pleased and proud of how well he has done this year.
Proud to be a Bengals Fan. WHO-DEY
