On this day five years ago... Cowher resigns in Walk-Off Fashion

The Bengals played host to the Pittsburgh Steelers on December 31, 2006. It was supposed to be the day that the Bengals were to celebrate a 2nd straight season to the Playoffs, however that was not the case.

The Bengals missed a field goal in the final seconds of regulation and in the 3rd play of overtime, Rookie Wide Receiver Santonio Holmes made the Bengals pay, as Ben Roethlisberger connected with Holmes on a 67 yard Touchdown and the Steelers upset the Bengals 23-17 in the Regular Season Finale and Bill Cowher would resigned days later.

First Time since 1997

The Bengals will be playing host to the Baltimore Ravens in the Regular Season Finale for the first time since 1997. It was also the last game of Boomer Esiason's Career.

The Bengals won that game 16-14. Boomer's final pass was a 77 yard Touchdown Pass to Darnay Scott.

Congrats to the Bengals on a winning season

Who would have thought it. People were comparing the Bengals to the 2007 Miami Dolphins as the season began. Hence the Bengals only had one home game sold out thanks to the Steelers. This team has played outstanding this year. Andy Dalton has played lights out, the defense is playing at a high level. I think the Bengals will make it to the playoffs this year. I can sense it.

On this day in Bengals History

On December 24, 2005, The Cincinnati Bengals, who had clinched their first Division Championship in 15 years the previous week hosted the Buffalo Bills. The Bengals had a chance to tie the game late, but Buffalo Cornerback Terrance McGee had other ideas...

McGee had stunned the Paul Brown Stadium crowd with a Kickoff return for a Touchdown earlier. This time, he would clinch Buffalos Victory with a Interception returned for a Touchdown in a 37-27 Bills Victory.

The next season, the Bengals traveled to Denver to take on the Broncos. The Bengals trailed late and scored a touchdown to bring them to with in a point. But a botched snap on a extra point would seal the Bengals fate as the would fall to Denver 28-27 ending their hopes at making the postseason for the second straight year.

On this day in 2005; The Bengals are Division Champs

On this day in 2005, The Cincinnati Bengals traveled to Detroit and to Ford Field to play the Lions. The Bengals needed to win to clinch a playoff spot and the division and things got off to a awesome start.

The Bengals defeated the Lions 41-17 behind the passing of Carson Palmer, running of Rudi Johnson, the pass catching of Chad Johnson, Kelley Washington and their defense. It was a great day to be a Bengals fan in 2005.

On this day in Kentucky Basketball History

On this day in 2001, Kentucky hosted North Carolina in Basketball. It was an electric environment at Rupp Arena. Fans were treated to a performance for the ages thanks to Tayshaun Prince.

The senior southpaw scored the first 15 points all on threes as the Cats defeated the Tar Heels 79-59. Kentucky would go on to the sweet 16, bowing out to eventual National Champion Maryland.

This occured to me Sunday night

Sunday night, UNLV played North Carolina in the Vegas Classic. UNLV won. Out of the last twenty five Final Four Most Outstanding Players, two of them did not get drafted by the NBA and they both played for these schools.

Anderson Hunt; UNLV 1990 Final Four MOP. Led the Rebels to a Blowout victory over Duke in Denver and as a Junior led the Rebels back to the Final Four and scored 29 points in the Rebels 79-77 defeat to the eventual National Champion Duke

Donald Williams; North Carolina 1993 Final Four MOP. Led North Carolina who had a awesome starting five: Eric Montross, Brian Reese, George Lynch, Derrick Phelps and Williams, to the National Championship. No one knew who Donald Williams was until the Final Four, 50 points in 2 games, 50% on three. Williams helped led the Tar Heels back to the Final Four in 1995, losing to defending National Champion Arkansas, in a Final Four Matchup that was the last match-up of defending National Champions and Final Four MOP's in the Final Four

On this Date in Dayton Basketball History

Dayton has beaten some big names on this date in recent years.

In 1999, the undefeated Flyers traveled to Cincinnati to take on the #12 Ranked Kentucky Wildcats at US Bank Arena. The Flyers shocked the state of Ohio that night beating the Wildcats 68-66, thanks to 23 points from Tony Stanley. This occured during my senior year at Lehman Catholic High School and it was my Classes Favorite Moment, because they got to give me a hard time about it for the remainder of the year.

In 2005, the Flyers made another trip to the Queen City, this time to take on the Cincinnati Bearcats at the Shoemaker Center. The Flyers stunned the Bearcats 73-65 thanks to the play of Monty Scott (23 points) Brian Roberts (25 Points) and James Cripe (12 points)

On this night in 2008, the Flyers played the Marquette Golden Eagles in the Final of the Chicago Challenge and upended the Golden Eagles 95-84 behind a career high 21 from Rob Lowery, 13 from Chris Wright and 19 from Chris Johnson

On this day in 2005; A thriller at Paul Brown Stadium

The Bengals were coming off their bye week in 2005. They were playing host to Peyton Manning and the undefeated Indianapolis Colts. It was also the first game in Paul Brown Stadium History that CBS lead team of Jim Nantz and Phil Simms called.

The Bengals did not disappoint. The Colts outlasted the Bengals 45-37. Chad Johnson backed up his guarantee by having a fine performance that included a 65 yard Touchdown from Carson Palmer.

Being a die-hard Bengals fan for my entire life, I have never seen the Bengals play so well in a game they lost. Having it be against someone else, they probably would have won.

The Bengals ended the season winning the AFC North and the Colts ended up with the #1 Seed in the AFC and winning the AFC South. Both teams were bounced in the Playoffs by the Pittsburgh Steelers

On this day in 2005; A thriller in the Big House

It was a thriller in the Big House as Ohio State came into Ann Arbor and squared off against their hated Rivals. The Wolverines led 21-12 in the 4th Quarter.

Troy Smith connected with Santonio Holmes for a 20 yard Touchdown to cut the deficit to 21-19. Stage was set for a great finish. The Buckeyes were driving down the field and faced a 3rd and 5 in Michigan territory. Troy Smith connected with Wide Receiver Anthony Gonzalez to set up Antonio Pittman's 3 yard Touchdown with 35 seconds left.

Michigan tryed to rally, but Tyler Ecker was tackled in-bounds at the Ohio State 45 with 5 seconds left and time ran out as the Buckeyes danced on the Block M logo at Mid-field.

Ohio State would go on to play Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl and Michigan would play Nebraska in the Alamo Bowl to finish their seasons.

On this day in 2006

Ohio State would defeat the Wolverines 42-39, as Jim Tressel would improve to 5-1 against the Maize and Blue, Troy Smith would go 3-0 against the Wolverines and Chad Henne; one the best Quarterbacks in Big Ten History, would go 0-4 against the Buckeyes.

John Navarre, is the last Michigan Quarterback to beat Ohio State. He lead the Wolverines to a 35-21 victory over the Buckeyes in 2003.

On this day in 2007

There were a few memorable sports moments that took place on this day in 2007

Congrats to Coach K

Congratulations to Coach Mike Krzyzewski for setting the all time wins record in Men's College Basketball. Coach K is a first class man, who cares about his team, school and loyalty.

It was great to see a lot of former Duke players in attendance on TV. It was fitting to achieve this record setting goal at the Mecca of Basketball; Madison Square Garden

At this time in 2003 and 2005

Former Cincinnati Bengals Wide Receiver Chad Ocho Cinco; formerly called Johnson is known for making two guarantees

In 2003, The Bengals were hosting the Kansas City Chiefs and Johnson guaranteed "We will win next Sunday against Kansas City, that is a guarantee"

In 2005, as the Bengals were coming off their bye week, they were about to host the Indianapolis Colts who were undefeated at the time, Johnson guaranteed "I will guarantee you I will not be stopped on Sunday"

Steelers and Bengals have had a good rivalry over the years

Today was no different. The Bengals and Steelers have produced a good rivalry over the years. Since Mike Tomlin has been with the Steelers, some of the games have been very close.

2007: the first game between the two in Cincy, A game I was at, the Steelers win a hard fought 24-13 game. Both teams played well, the Steelers made more plays then what the Bengals did.

2009: The Bengals win both Games as they sweep the division

2010: The Steelers win a close one in Cincy 26-21 as Cincy's drive for the winning score Stalls at the Steeler 10 yard line.

Today; November 13, 2011: The Steelers hold off a tough Bengals team as their trademark D picks off Andy Dalton in the 4th Quarter.

Basketball Looks good Outdoors and under the lights

I think after Last Night's amazing night in San Diego, I think the NBA and College Basketball should give a lot of heavy thought into playing more Games Outside. Especially in California, Arizona, Florida etc. Basketball looks good outdoors and under the lights.

On this day in 1991, A Dark Moment in NBA History

On this day in 1991, LA Lakers Guard Magic Johnson, one of the League's Greatest Players in its history, shocked the sports world with the announcement that he had tested positive for the HIV Virus.

Johnson was selected for the NBA All Star Game in Orlando and dazzled fans with a MVP performance. He helped the Dream Team win the Gold in Barcelona and in 2002 was inducted in the Naismith Hall of Fame by a Unianimous Vote and was presented by his good friend Larry Bird.

The Bengals have snapped draughts in 4 straight weeks

The Bengals are having a sensational season. They have ended draughts that have lasted, 22, 14, 16 and 17 years ( the last time on the west coast, was 2003).

They Beat Buffalo four weeks ago for the first time since the 1988 AFC Championship Game

They beat Jacksonville in Jacksonville for the first time since their Inaugural Season, thanks to the heroics of Jeff Blake and Carl Pickens

They Beat Indianapolis for the first time since 1997, a Game that Legendary Bengals QB Boomer Esiason threw for 2 Second Half Touchdowns in and a 28-13 Victory

This past week, they beat Seattle out in Washington for the first time since the 1994 season which was their first Victory of that very season thanks to Jeff Blake's 78 yard Strike to Darnay Scott to set up Doug Pelfrey's Game Winning Field Goal in a Overtime 20-17 Victory. Pelfrey kicked six Field Goals that day, which was a record at the time, only to be snapped by Shane Graham in 2007.

On this day six year ago... A very memorable moment in Bengals History

On this day in 2005, The Bengals hosted a struggling Green Bay Packers team. The Bengals jumped out to a 14-7 lead in the second quarter. Brett Favre had one of his worst games of his career, throwing 6 Interceptions. With the Bengals ahead 21-14 late in the 4th Quarter, stage was set for a memorable Paul Brown Stadium Moment.

The Packers had the ball in Bengals territory, and a fan came running onto the field, took the ball from Favre and got tackled near the Packers 15 yard line. Favre got sacked on the next play then tried to spike the ball, instead fake spiked it and time ran out as the Bengals prevailed 21-14.

On this date in Cincinnati Professional Sports History

On this day in Bengals History…

The Bengals traveled to San Francisco on October 20, 1996. They were facing a 49er team led by HOFer Steve Young, Jerry Rice and a outstanding team. The Bengals led 21-0 in the 2nd quarter but the 49ers rallied behind the Gutsy performance by Steve Young, who was playing with a injured groin. The 49ers came back to defeat the Bengals 28-21 and two days after the game, Bengals head coach Dave Shula was fired. It was also the same game that Terrell Owens scored his first NFL Touchdown.

Shula was replaced by Offensive Coordinator Bruce Coslet, who brought a spark to the Queen City and the Bengals finished the season at 8-8.

This also marks the 21 year anniversary of the Reds last World Series Championship in 1990 as they swept the Oakland A’s in 4 straight behind MVP Jose Rijo's performance.

I did not know this...

I did not know that when Sam Wyche resigned or got fired by the Bengals that the Bengals had a choice between Bill Cowher and Dave Shula as a replacement. I think we all know how not so great that turned out.

Also, that the New Orleans Saints wanted to trade all their picks in the 1998 Draft for the Bengals #3 pick for Akili Smith, yeah, thats how pathetic the 90's were for beloved Bengal Fans

Six years ago today

The Cincinnat Bengals defeated the Tenneesee Titans, 31-23 at LP Field in Nashville. The Bengals trailed 23-17 late in the 4th Quarter when Carson Palmer connected with Chad Johnson on a 18 yard touchdown. Then Tory James sealed the win with a interception two plays later.

It's hard for me to believe...

It's hard for me to believe that its been five years since the likes of: London Warren, Ty Lawson, Sherron Collins, David Lighty, Greg Oden, Wayne Ellington, Kalin Lucas, Kurt Huelsman, Vaughn Duggins, Todd Brown, Jon Scheyer, Greg Zoubek, Edgar Sosa, Derrick Brown, Scottie Reynolds, Kevin Durant, all began their College Careers at Midnight Madness at their respective schools.

On this day six years ago... Three thrillers in College Football

On this day in 2005, Ohio State hosted Michigan State, Notre Dame hosted Southern California and Michigan hosted Penn State. All three games were thrillers.

Ohio State rallied from a 1st quarter deficit to defeat the Spartans in a thriller in Columbus

Notre Dame and USC played a thriller in South Bend in a game that went down to the final play. Matt Leinart connected on a 4th and 9 with 2:00 minutes left to set up the most memorable 1 yard QB sneak in College Football history. Leinart scored with 3 seconds left thanks from a push from Reggie Bush.

Michigan hosted Penn State. The Nitny Lions led with 5 seconds left, Chad Henne connected with Mario Manningham as time expired as the Wolverines upset the Big Ten Leading Lions.

Six years ago tonight...

Six Years ago tonight, The Jacksonville Jaguars hosted the Cincinnati Bengals on ESPN Sunday Night Football. The Bengals came in undefeated at 4-0, even though they should have lost their previous game against the Houston Texans. The Jaguars were lead by Quarterback Byron Leftwich, Running Back Fred Taylor and wide receiver Jimmy Smith. The Bengals were led by a stout defense, Carson Palmer, Chad Johnson, Rudi Johnson and Chris Henry. The Bengals first touchdown was scored by Chad Johnson, who ended up doing CPR on the football in the endzone. The Bengals had the ball late and Palmer was sacked by a Jacksonville Defender and fumbled the ball. The Jaguars defeated the Bengals 23-20.

Today, the Bengals defeated the Jaguars 30-20, their first Victory in Jacksonville since 1995; the Jaguars first year of existence.

On this day 12 years ago... A Last for Cinergy Field

On this day in 1999, The Cincinnati Reds hosted the New York Mets in the one game tiebreaker for the National League Wildcard. The Reds were lead by Barry Larkin, Pokey Reese, Sean Casey, Eddie Taubensee, Greg Vaughn, Dmitri Young. The Mets were led by Mike Piazza, Rickey Henderson, Robin Ventura, Edgar Alfonzo, Rey Ordonez. The Reds sent right hander Steve Parris to the mound, while the Mets went with lefthander Al Leiter. Cinergy Field was packed, the game sold out in 20 minutes, a record. Bobby Valentine, the Mets manager that year said that was the loudest ballpark he ever managed a game in. The Mets were coming into the game fresh off a sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates, while the Reds came in thanks to a blowout victory over the Milwaukee Brewers the previous night.

Five pitches into the game, the Mets had a 2-0 lead, thanks to a Edgar Alfonzo Home Run. A 2-0 lead that year was nothing for the Reds in 1999, unfortunately, that was not the case that night. Mets pitcher Al Leiter pitched a masterpiece that night, giving up 2 hits and shutting out the Reds 5-0 as he went the distance. Al Leiter, to me is one of the Top 10 pitchers in October over the last 15 years. The Mets Cinderella Ride ended in the NLCS.

The Reds would not play a meaningful October game until October of 2010. They were swept by the Philadelphia Phillies in the NLDS, as they were shut out twice in three games, Roy Halladay threw a no-hitter in Game One and Cole Hamels pitched a 5 hit complete game Shut Out in Game 3.

Six years ago today... One of the finest Bengal performances ever

On this day in 2005, The Bengals hosted the Minnesota Vikings at Paul Brown Stadium. The Vikings were heavy favorites to make the Super Bowl that year, but on the games second play from scrimmage Chad Johnson had something to say about that as he took Fred Smoot downtown for a 68 yard Touchdown on the games 2nd offensive play. The Bengals played great that afternoon. Carson Palmer looked amazing that day throwing three Touchdown passes in the first half, Johnson, Housmanzadah and Tight End Matt Schebel. The Bengals defense intercepted Viking QB Dante Culpepper 7 times that day, four of those INT's were made by Deltha O'Neal and he almost returned one for a Touchdown. The Bengals defeated the Vikings 37-8. My cousins Peter, Eli, Jake and myself were at the game, it was pretty awesome

Also on this very day, the Browns upset the Packers at Lambeau Field, 26-24. Braylon Edwards scored his first two NFL Touchdowns.

Five years ago today... The end for two Bengals players

On this day five years ago, My Dad, Emily, Justin, Doug, Scott, Brad and Kurt Barhorst went to the Bengals Browns game at Paul Brown Stadium. I to this day have referred to that game as the "heater bowl", being at that game was like sitting in an outdoor oven it was that warm. The Bengals won 34-17, however that game signaled the end for two Bengal players; Rich Braham and David Pollack

September 15, 1996, the Cincinnati Bengals hosted the New Orleans Saints at The newly renamed Cinergy Field; formerly called Riverfront Stadium. There were a few firsts that afternoon: The Bengals first Victory of the season, Ki-Jana Carter’s first NFL Touchdown and the first regular season game I attended that the Bengals won. The Bengals defeated the Saints 30-15. Jeff Blake connected with Darney Scott in the 2nd Quarter for a 27 yard Touchdown, Ki-Jana Carter scored his first NFL touchdown in the first quarter and Eric Bienemy scored a TD in the 4th. It was also the last NFL Victory for Bengals Coach Dave Shula, who was fired at mid-season and replaced by Bruce Coslet.

On this day in 2005... It's football season

Six years ago today, was the begining of the NFL season. The Bengals played the Browns in Cleveland and it was the first game for new Head Coach Romeo Cornel. The Bengals won 27-13. Carson Palmer threw 2 TD's, one to Kevin Walter and one to Jeremi Johnson. The Bengals defense intercepted Trent Dilfer 4 times.

Also on that day, The Lions beat the Packers at Ford Field. It was also the last game for Packer Wide Receiver Javon Walker, who tore his ACL in the 3rd Quarter.

Also on that Sunday six year ago, The New Orleans Saints, whose proud city was devastated by Hurricane Katrina days earlier, found the strength and courage to focus on their first game of the season and beat the Carolina Panthers 20-17 in what was the most Couragous Team Moments in all of sports.

Six years ago tonight, A thriller in Columbus

Six years ago tonight, the #4 Ranked Ohio State Buckeyes hosted the #2 ranked Texas Longhorns in their first ever battle. It was a rucus atmosphere in Columbus. The Longhorns jumped out to a 10-0 lead behind QB Vince Young. The Buckeyes rallyed behind the passing of Troy Smith and the defense of AJ Hawk and Bobby Carpenter to grab a 22-16 lead in the 4th Quarter, but Young and the Longhorns would have the last laugh. Young connected with Limas Sweed for 23 yards and the go ahead score with 2:15 remaining as the Longhorns escaped Columbus with a 25-22 victory.

The Longhorns would go on to win the National Championship, defeating 2 time Champion USC in the Rose Bowl, thanks to the heroics of Vince Young.

On this day 10 years ago... A Last for the Bengals

On this day in 2001, the Bengals hosted the New England Patriots on opening day at Paul Brown Stadium. The Bengals were coming off a 4-12 season, while the Patriots were coming off a 6-10 season.

The Patriots lead 10-0 going into the 2nd Quarter. Jon Kitna led the Bengals back. Corey Dillon scored from 5 yards out to tie the game in the 2nd Quarter, then Kitna hit tight end Tony McGee for his first Touchdown pass as a Bengal in the 3rd Quarter as the Bengals jumped out to a 23-10 lead. Things were looking good for the Bengals. But the Patriots had one last chance. The Bengals defense led by Takeo Spikes and Brian Simmons, sacked Drew Bledsoe, who started his second to last game as a Patriot that day, on back to back plays as the Bengals prevailed 23-17. It was the last Bengals victory over New England.

The Bengals would finish the season 6-10, while the Patriots would finish their season 11-5 and defeated the St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI, 20-17.

On this date in Baseball History

On this day in 1995, Cal Ripken Jr, broke Lou Gerig's all time consecutive games streak, 2,131. The Orioles hosted the California Angels that night and Ripken hit a Home Run, as ESPN's Chris Berman put it: "Oh my Goodness He's done it again". Ripken retired in 2001. Was a 2 time All Star Game MVP and in his Finale, stood on deck as Brady Anderson Struck Out to end the 2001 season for the Orioles.

Six years ago today... Ohio State Starts off the season strong

On this day six years ago, Ohio State, Ranked #6 in the Country hosted Miami University who was under the leadership of first year Head Coach Shane Montgomery. The Buckeyes looked like they were in Midseason form. Lead by Justin Zwick, Santonio Holmes, Ted Ginn and the Big Ten's top defense, the Buckeyes defeated the Redhawks 34-14. Justin Zwick had an excellent game filling in for the suspended Troy Smith. St. Henry Native Todd Boeckman threw his first Touchdown Pass as a Buckeye in the Fourth Quarter. I was real pleased with how hard Miami played that day. Their defense intercepted a pass in the endzone in the 2nd Quarter, a one handed grab. Forced a turnover on a kickoff after their first touchdown in the fourth quarter. Their Quarterback Josh Betts, a Vandaila Butler Grad had an excellent game throwing for 278 yards and a touchdown.

The Buckeyes went on to win a share of the Big Ten Championship and won the Fiesta Bowl, beating Notre Dame 34-20. AJ Hawk, Bobby Carpenter and Andy Schleigel were a fun group of linebackers to watch in the Scarlet and Gray.

At this time in Lehman Catholic Football History

Well, its High School Football season. There have been some pretty memorable season openers in Lehman Football History. During my Four years at Lehman, the Cavaliers were victorious in All Four Games. Beating Ansonia Convincingly.

Here are some of the memorable opening night games for Lehman Football.

1992: Lehman wins a Triple Overtime thriller at Piqua's Wertz Stadium against Ansonia thanks to the heroics of kicker Rusty Badgett

1993: Lehman opens up at historic campaign beating Ansonia thanks to the running of Ryan Soloman.

1996: My first High School Game as a member of Lehman Student, we beat Ansonia 62-7, at Julia Lamb Stadium behind Kevin Darner's 4 touchdowns and Justin Frantz opening his High School Career with two Rushing TD's

1998: Lehman begins the 1998 Campaign with a convincing win over Ansonia at Wertz Stadium, but the bigger moments of that season happened in the next two weeks.

2001: The Cavaliers open up Jeff Uhlenake's Lehman Carrer with a convincing win over Akron Manchester at the new Piqua Alexander Stadium. The Cavaliers would go on to the State Semi's bowing out to Marion Pleasant.

2002: Lehman opens up the season with a hard-fought 31-26 Victory over St. Henry

On this date in Major Sports History

On this day in 1994, Major League Baseball went on Strike. The last game that night, was between the Mariners and Angels. Randy Johnson pitched. The playoffs were canceled and so was the World Series. I talk to some people today and they would say that they refuse to get into baseball because of the strike in 1994

On this day in Area Electric Softball History... 3 years ago

Three years ago, Area Electric had a coed softball team. We played 47 Bar and Grill that night and we were batting in the 4th inning. We had a runner on base and Ryan Scheib, one of our salespeople, was batting and gets called out on strikes on a pitch, “way outside the strike zone”, on the way back to our dugout, he was swearing at the umpire, because we got no calls that night. The next batter, Ivy Jenkins grounds into the inning ending double play and she was pissed off as well. I led off the next inning and was facing a 3-1 count and I thought the pitch was outside and it was called a strike and I say to myself, “how is that a strike”, I grounded out to second base. That’s how our night went, we got no calls in a 16-3 defeat in five innings.

We went a dismal 1-11 that season, losing our last two games by a combined score of 72-2, to the best team in the COED league.

It's All Star Game Time

It's time for the mid summer classic in Baseball. I usually get into this moment in sports. A few of my favorite mid-summer night moments are:

1994: Fred McGriff's game tying 2 run home run, after Craig Biggio grounded into the biggest fielders choice in ASG History. Moises Alou doubled home the winning run in the 10th Inning.

1995: after trailing 2-0, the National's used home runs from Mike Piazza, Craig Biggio and MVP Jeff Conine to win 3-2

2002: game ends in a tie after both teams use all pitchers

2007: American league wins thriller in San Francisco

2010: Brian McCann's bases clearing double leads National's to first victory since 1996

Time for some changes in the Nati

I say it is time for some changes in Cincinnati. The Reds have not looked good all season except for the beginning. I think that Volquez needs to take a hike, Stubbs needs to be on the bench or down at Triple A and they need to find some "consistency". I am a fan of shortstop Paul Janish, the guy plays super defense, but they do need some offense out of that position as well.

NBA and NFL, two of my favorite sports enduring work stoppages. Not Good

I dont like what I am hearing about the NBA going into a Lockout. I am hoping they will get that situation resolved soon.

As for the NFL, I hear that good things are coming. We may see an NFL season after all.

A comeback for the ages... Video Game and NBA 99 Style

It was at this time 10 years ago, when the Phoenix Suns made a memorable comeback against their hated rivals.

The Houston Rockets, who were led by Mitch Geise, Eli Schlater, The Dream, Tony Staley and Tony Cianciolo, led the Phoenix Suns 91-83 with 42 seconds left in overtime. Everyone thought the game was over, just not the Phoenix Suns.

The Suns had Justin Seger, Bryan Olding, Cory Steinke, Tony Delk and I on the floor, it was our three point offense. Cory threw a perfect inbound pass to me over the outstreched hand of Tony Staley as a drilled a "one in a million 3 pointer". After a Cianciolo turnover, the Suns quickly raced the ball up the floor, I found Tony Delk on the right wing for a three to bring us to with in two.

After another Rockets Gaffe, we had the ball with 20 seconds left down two and were struggling to find the best shot possible, I hit a runner in the lane to tie the game at 91 with 9 seconds left.

This was the day after I got my wisdom teeth pulled and I hated the Rockets for trading me as well and I wanted to give them a small payback for what was about to come.

After a Houston missed shot, the Suns would have the ball at mid court, stage was set for a perfect ending to a great comeback.

I hit a three pointer from the right wing as time expired to give us a 94-91 victory, ending overtime on a 11-0 run.

The Suns and Rockets would meet in the playoffs, with the Suns upsetting Houston 4-1, three of the four Suns Victories in the series were by a combined 5 points

Congrats Rory: The true heart of a champion

Rory McIlory, who endured a not so memorable Final Round at Augusta National, braught his A game to Congressional Country Club in our Nations Capital. McIlory showed the true heart of a champion this weekend and won going away. Breaking numerous US Open records on his way to the championship. Well done Rory.

My top 10 to win the US Open

  • Dustin Johnson
  • Rory McIlroy
  • Phil Mickelson ( who is due for a Open Championship)
  • Matt Kuchar
  • Lee Westwood ( who is also due for a Major)
  • Luke Donald
  • Michael Campbell
  • Geoff Ogilvy
  • Adam Scott
  • Bubba Waston

We all know it is hard to repeat in Major's. That is why Grame McDowell did not make the list. I would have to put my money on Last Years PGA Championship runner up Dustin Johnson, Lee Westwood, Rory McIlory, Matt Kuchar and Phil Mickelson.

I would like to see McIlory bounce back after a night mare finish at Augusta. It would be nice to see Mickelson win as well.

I think its awesome that the Top 3 Golfers are paired together for the first two rounds

On this day in NBA Playoff History

On this day in 1997, The Chicago Bulls won their 5 NBA Championship 90-86 in Game 6 of the 1997 Finals. Michael Jordan was named Finals MVP.

On this date in NBA Playoff History

On June 11, 1997, Michael Jordan played the greatest game of his NBA career. He endured the stomach flu and helped lead the Bulls to a 88-86 win against the Utah Jazz in Game 5 of the Finals, scoring 38 points.

Two years later on the same date, the New York Knicks had the opportunity to become the first ever #8 seed to reach the NBA Finals. They would have to do it without the services of Patrick Ewing and Larry Johnson. Led by Allan Houston, Marcus Camby, Latrell Sprewell and Charlie Ward, the Knicks held off the Pacers 92-86 at Madison Square Garden and became the first #8 seed to make the NBA Finals. The Knicks would lose to the San Antonio Spurs in 5 Games

On this weekend in Reds History

I went to Cincinnati with my cousins to the Reds Baltimore Orioles series, I got to see the first two games of the series. The Reds got outstanding pitching during those two games. The first night, Aaron Hurrang pitched for the Reds and did well, striking out 11 Orioles, but his only mistake was giving up a 3 run home run to Melvin Mora in a 4-2 Orioles Victory.
The very next night, was a different story. The Reds defeated the Orioles 12-1, behind Felipe Lopez’ Grand Slam and the outstanding pitching of left hander Brandon Clausen, who took a no hitter into the sixth inning. Jose Rijo and Eric Davis, two members from the 1990 World Series team, were inducted into the Reds Hall of Fame that night.

It was about this time 20 years ago and 13 years ago

It was about this time 20 years ago, that the Lehman Baseball team played in the State Baseball Final against Parkway. The Cavs were led by some outstanding players: Kevin Behr, Ryan Solmann, Brian Stewart, Tom Spoltman, Rob Wertz, Chris Jessup. The Cavs fell to Parkway 3-0 in the State Finals.

Seven years later, the Cavs were back in the State Finals. Led by the likes of Luke Wagner, Dustin Lampe, Geoff Garmhausen, Matt Graver, Matt Hare, Chad Waters, Adam Lessing, Mike and Wayne Leiss, Brad Graver. The Cavs got to to Title Game by defeating Lima Perry in the semis thanks to two brillant catches by Matt Graver in right center field. The Cavs would lose the State Title game 9-2 against a team from Cleveland.

A Debut for the ages in Baseball

One year ago tonight, baseball fans in our Nation's Capital were treated to something they will remember for a very long time. Stephen Strasburg, the most highly touted #1 baseball draft pick in recent memory, made his Major League Debut in front of a sell out crowd at Nationals Park. Strasburg pitched 7 Innings, struck out 14 batters and beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-1. Strasburg would pitch 12 games in his rookie season before suffering an elbow injury that would end his season. I had the chance to watch him pitch against the Reds last season and I was very impressed with the youngster.

On this day in NBA Playoff History

The New York Knicks were hosting the Indiana Pacers in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals. The Knicks were playing without Patrick Ewing, who was suffering from a partially torn Achilles. The Pacers led 91-88 with 11 seconds left, but forward Larry Johnson would etch his name into NBA playoff lore, he buried a 3 pointer with 5 seconds left and was fouled, he made the subsequent Free Throw to give the Knicks the lead and the Victory and the Knicks would go on to win the Series in six games becoming the first #8 seed to make the NBA Finals.

goodbye lukeschlater.blogspot.com

Well, after a few weeks of giving it some thought, I am going to be removing my personal blog page; lukeschlater.blogspot.com. I have taken a lot of heat for the stuff i have put on my page and received a lot of AC's for the things I have posted on there. So in the next few days, lukeschlater.blogspot.com will no longer be available to anyone. thanks

Goodbye Tressel; thank you for the memories

Well, after 10 years and months of speculation, Jim Tressel is out as Ohio State football coach. He was a joy to everyone in Buckeye nation. I enjoyed watching the Buckeyes play while Tressel was the coach. In 2004 after Ted Ginn's punt return against the Maize and Blue, I decided it was time to join the Buckeyes fan club. I did not like seeing Ohio State dominate Michigan like they were at the time. The Buckeyes made 8 BCS games during Tressel's tenure. Winning the 2003 BCS Title against Miami and winning thrillers against Notre Dame in 2006, Oregon in 2010 and Arkansas in 2011.

Thank you for everything you did for Buckeye football. You will be missed.

Mike Brown, a good fit for the Lakers

Mike Brown, who coached the Cleveland Cavaliers is the new coach of the LA Lakers. I think he is a good fit for the Lakers. Defense wins championships and he is a defense first coach. I can see Kobe winning two or more championships by the time his career is over.

At this time 10 years ago... A return to my life's hobby and passion

It was about this time 10 years ago when I made my return to the world of video games. I began by playing a season with the Houston Rockets on NBA Live 99. The Rockets starting five that season would include: Justin Seger, Mitch Geise, Tony Staley, Tony Cianciolo and myself. I would set the single season assist record that season and then get traded to the Phoenix Suns. The Rockets began their first campaign in my comeback tour with a 65 point victory over the Golden State Warriors. I would tally 25 Assists in the opener. Tony Cianciolo and Tony Staley would score 26 and 23 points respectfully.  The Rockets would go on to win the NBA Championship, sweeping the Orlando Magic in the Finals.

On this day Last year: LeBron's Last game as a Cleveland Cavalier

It was one year ago today that Lebron James played in his last game as a Cavalier. Despite a Triple Double, The Cavaliers fell to the Celtics by 9 and lost the series in 6 games.

The Laker's and Phil say bye bye

Well, Bye bye to one of the NBA's best teams, The Lakers. The Dallas Mavericks were too much for them to overcome in the 2nd round and the Mavs also said So long to Phil Jackson.

The Heat are one win away from beating the Celtics. The Thunder and Grizz are even after four games.

At this time 12 years ago

Twelve years ago, Mom, Dad, Eli and I went down to Cincinnati to meet Rick and Angie to watch the first two game of the Reds Cubs series at Cinergy Field. The Cubs jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the middle of the 9th inning. With one runner on base, Sean Casey was up to bat and was facing a two strike count. He then doubled off the right center field wall to put runners in scoring position. Cincinnati Native Barry Larkin came to the plate and hit the walk off double to bring both runners in. The crowd would chant “Barry Barry”.

The very next day, the Cubs would get the better of the Reds. The Cubs were lead by Benito Santiago’s two Home Runs and then Sammy Sosa came up in the top of the 7th inning and drilled a solo home run into the Red seats at Cinergy Field. With the Cubs leading the Reds 7-4 in the ninth inning, left fielder Greg Vaughn stepped up to the plate and nearly hit a game tying three run home run, but he missed it by 10 feet. The Cubs held on for a 7-4 win. I remember that night, The Lumsden’s, Mom, Dad, Eli and I went to the Revolving Restaurant in Cincinnati to have dinner and Benito Santiago was there eating dinner that night. It was a fun filled weekend.

Getting syked for Golf weather

Well, its Spring time and I am getting ready for some golf action. Five-six years ago, I did not care for the sport. Someone in the Schlater Family needed to keep Herb Schlater's Legacy going. I'm going to Naples in August, just like I did last year. I am so excited to go back. Later

I Can't stand the Heat

I can not stand the Miami Heat. Talk about EGO's. Ego's dont win Championships, teams do. Well, thats all I have for now. Later

Heat move on, Grizz 1.4 seconds away from history

The Heat got by a pesky 76er team last night. I dont think they will get by the Celtics thought. The Celtics are playing at a top level right now and in mid season form.

The Memphis Grizz were 1.4 seconds away from becoming the second #8 seed to beat a #1 in the first round seven game format. But, George Hill's three forced the game into overtime where the Spurs prevailed. I think the Grizz will win Game 6 on their home court and move on to the second round.

Monday, April 25, 2011

Celtics on their way to the 2nd round.

The Celtics swept the Knicks out of the postseason. They look like they are in mid-season form. I think it would be awesome to see a seven game series between the Celtics and the Heat in the next round. The Celtics beat the Heat three out of the four times they played this year. With their experience, I think that the Celtics will prevail.

Happy Retirement Woody

Well, one of College Basketball's finest voices and great broadcasters, Woody Durham is calling it a Career. Durham called games for North Carolina for 40 years. It was a joy listening to him on some Highlight reels. One of the more memorable Woody Durham calls was: "Technical Foul, Technical Foul on Michigan, there out of Time Outs". 1993 Title game

Knight, Jones and Liggins better stay

Brandon Knight, DeAndre Liggins and Terrance Jones are not smart for declaring for the NBA draft. They did not sign with an agent, which is key because they have the option of coming back and I hope they do.

About this time, 15 years ago

It was about this time 15 years ago that Ervin "Magic" Johnson came out of retirement to play for the Lakers.  One of his memorable moments during his brief stint happened during a game against the Phoenix Suns at the Forum in 1996. He went up for a layup and thought he was fouled and got upset. He then went over to the official argued with him and bumped into him and then got ejected. Magic would retire after the 1996 season. He was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame by a Unanimous vote in 2002 and was presented by Larry Bird.

NBA post season is here

Well, this is the only reason why I watch the NBA, is because of the playoffs. I have seen a lot of memorable moments in postseason play. The Denver Nuggets becoming the first #8 seed to beat a #1, Seattle Supersonics ( Now the Oklahoma City Thunder), in 1994, The New York Knicks making it to the NBA Finals as a #8 seed in 1999 ( more on that at another time), Golden State Warriors in 2007, shocking the Dallas Mavericks. Michael Jordan leading the Bulls to six championships in eight years, Kobe Bryant leading the Lakers to five championships in the last 11 years, Tim Duncan leading the San Antonio Spurs to four championships, Reggie Miller heroics against the Knicks in 1994, 1995 and his memorable Duel with Ray Allen in 2000 in Game 5. Larry Bird leading the Celtics to victory in 1991 in Game 5 against the Pacers, after missing the second quarter with a concussion. I have seen a lot of memorable games in the last 20 years: Knicks vs Pacers; Game’s 5 and 7 1994, Game 3 1999, Heat and Knicks Game 5 1999, Games 6-7 2000, Bucks vs Pacers Game 5 2000, Spurs vs Pistons Games 5 and 7 2005, Cavaliers vs Pistons Game 5 2007, Celtics vs Cavaliers Game 7 2008, Game 4 2010, Lakers Vs Celtics Game 4 2008, Game 7 2010, Magic vs Cavaliers Games 1, 2, 4-5 2009, Michael Jordan’s Flu game in 1997; Game 5, Celtics vs Nets Game 3 2002. I am not that big of an NBA fan, like I am college, but I do remember some memorable moments.

God Bless Rory, Congrats to Schwartzel

Well, yesterday was a fun filled day of golf on TV, I wish I can say the same for me, but I can't. Rory McLory held a 5 shot lead going into the final round and lead by 2 shots going into the 11th hole where Rory self-destructed.  It was a fun day of The Masters on TV. Tiger Woods got back in it, but finished tied for fourth. The green jacket went to Charl Schwartzel, from South Africa, who finished his round making four straight birdies.

The Masters: A Tradition unlike any other

This is one of the main reasons why I wanted to get interested in golf. The History, Mystique, Augusta National Golf Club. Every year, the years first major comes to Augusta, Georgia in April. Guys like Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson, Graeme McDowell, Paul Casey, Dustin Johnson, Martin Kaymer, Lee Westwood, Fred Couples bring their games to Georgia. Last year, saw Fred Couples (50) and Tom Watson (61) on the top of the leader board after the first round. Lee Westwood and Phil Mickelson in the days final pairing on Sunday, with Mickelson coming out on top. This year is the 25th anniversary of Jack Nicklaus’ sixth and final Masters victory, the 15th anniversary of Nick Faldo coming back to beat Greg Norman on Sunday with Norman holding a six shot lead, the 6th anniversary of Tiger Woods holding off Chris DiMarco, the 2nd anniversary of Angel Cabrera coming back to defeat Kenny Perry on the second playoff hole. I love watching this Tournament, the history, Mystique is what makes it so fun to watch. Watching this tournament and seeing how much fun the players have playing in this tournament, made me want to get my clubs out of the closet in the garage and get out and play all the time. Not to mention, for the second straight year, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus will be the honorary starters, which is awesome.

On this day last year. UD FLYERS NIT CHAMPS

The Dayton Flyers, a team who had an awesome senior class of Kurt Huelsman, London Warren, Mickey Perry, Rob Lowery, Marcus Johnson, Dan Fox and Luke Hendrick, defeated the North Carolina Tar Heels 79-68 in the NIT Championship game. It was a great way for the seniors to end their Flyer career. Marcus Johnson led the Flyers with 20 points, while Tournament MOP Chris Johnson had 14 points. It’s been a year since the Flyers won the tournament and I still can not believe they won, especially beating the defending National Champions to do it.  The senior class would tie a record for the most wins in school history. It was a great group of guys to watch. It was a fitting way to end the season.

On this day in 1996... Tragedy strike's opening day

The Cincinnati Reds were hosting the Washington Nationals (Montreal Expos) on Opening Day in 1996 at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati. It was the first game for new Reds Manager Ray Knight, as he replaced former Manager Davey Johnson. Seven pitches into the game, Home plate umpire, John McSherry, called for time and walked towards the Reds dugout. He then Collapsed right in front of the Reds dugout. I remember sitting in Steve Schroeder’s classroom at Holy Angels that afternoon and he informed our class about the tragic moment in Cincinnati. He was then rushed to a local hospital and died moments later from a massive heart attack. I remember sitting in Ms Nerdermen’s classroom for a Tutoring session that afternoon and Steve came down to inform me of the Tragic News. It was a sad day in Major League Baseball.

On this day in Sports History

Duke played Kansas for the 1991 National Championship. The Blue Devils were a team on a mission that night. They defeated the Jayhawks 72-65 at the RCA Dome (then called the Hoosier Dome) in Indianapolis thanks to the play of Bobby Hurley, Grant Hill, Christian Latenner, Brian Davis, Thomas Hill.
On this night 15 years ago, Kentucky played Syracuse for the 1996 National Championship at the Meadowlands. It would be the last Final Four to be played in a non Dome. Kentucky would win its sixth National Championship, thanks to the play of MOP Tony Delk and his seven 3 pointers and the play of Freshmen Ron Mercer. John Wallace finished his Syracuse Career with a game high 29 points, the second most in Championship game history by a player on the losing team (John Morton; 1989) It was also the only game that Kentucky point guard, Wayne Turner did not play in, in his four years at Kentucky.
On this day nine years ago, Maryland took on Indiana for the 2002 National Championship at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. The Terrapins lead by six at the Half. Indiana fought its way back to a 44-42 lead with 10:00 to go, but Juan Dixon and the Terps, would go on a 20-8 run to close out their first National Championship.

On this day nine years ago, was the Final opening day at Cinergy Field. The Reds played host to the Cubs and were tied 4-4 going into the 9th inning. Aaron Boone stepped to the plate and hit a Sac Fly to bring in the winning run to cap off the last opening day at the ‘Ole Ball yard. The Reds would win 5-4 that afternoon. They would stay competitive all the way up until the final weeks of the season. I miss Cinergy Field. I had some great times at the ‘ole ball yard.

10 years ago tonight

On this day, 10 years ago, Arizona beat Michigan State 80-61 behind the play of Loren Woods, Richard Jefferson, Jason Gardner and Michael Wright. Shortly after that, Duke and Maryland went head to head for a 4th time. Maryland raced out to a 22 point lead. No lead was safe against the Blue Devils in 2001. The Devils stormed back to win 95-84 thanks to the play of Jason Williams, Shane Battier, Chris Duhon and Carlos Boozer. No lead against the 2001 Duke Blue Devil team was safe. This team had the heart of a champion. I remember watching the game at Holiday Lanes in Sidney with Tony Henning. I also saw my friend Justin Frantz there, he was there that night on a Blind Date that night.

On this day 20, 15 and 9 years ago

On this day in 1991, Duke beat UNLV 79-77 in the National Semifinal. It was the biggest upset in the history of the NCAA Tournament at the time. Vegas was undefeated at the time. Duke was led by the play of Bobby Hurley and Christian Lattener. I remember watching the game with Dad in the basement.

Five years later, Kentucky took on UMASS in a battle of #1 versus #2 in the Final Four. Kentucky was #2 at the time, however they were the better team that night. Kentucky won 81-74, behind the play of Tony Delk and Ron Mercer and the pressure defense. It was also one of the few times, that a #1 would play a #2 ranked team in the Final Four. Michigan State played Duke in Tampa in 1999, a game I was at, Illionis played North Carolina for the championship in 2005 and Florida played Ohio State in 2007. That Kentucky starting five in 1996, four of the starters got drafted by the NBA, point guard Anthony Epps was the only member of the starting five not to get drafted. I remember watching the game with Dad, my Uncle Dan and Matt Bowman and Matt Zimmerman.

On this day nine years ago, Indiana beat Oklahoma in the Final Four in one semifinal and Maryland beat Kansas in the other semifinal.

Why did I not…

As all of you may know, I am 100% passionate about sports. I love sports more than anything. Growing up I wanted to be a sports commentator. That was my goal 10 years ago at this time, to go to school and to become a sports commentator, in fact a couple of my friends wanted me to audition for ESPN’s dream job a few years ago, but I was way too nervous. At the time when I decided on a major, I decided to switch gears and change direction; I am not a fan of the English literature subject. So I decided to go with Business management as my first major at Edison. Turned out that I made a good choice to stay with the Business part, two and a half years later, I changed majors for the first and only time. When I decided to stop pursing my childhood and lifelong goal in the fall of 2001, I did not think I was going to pursue it all that hard again, however, this past fall, I was giving the thought of pursuing my childhood dream of becoming a sports commentator and wanted to give it a try, but because I am at an age where “HI” (Health Insurance) is so significant, I am currently not considering it. I am considering making a return trip to the classroom to take Marketing classes so that I gain some more knowledge and that way I can move up the latter or prepare me for future career endeavers.  I will always love sports, that is something that will never change for as long as I am alive. I have given the thought of giving sports marketing or sports management a try, but being 29 soon to be 30, who knows. I am proud and honored to be an Edison Graduate and I will always be as long as I am alive.

Best of Luck Coach Gregory

Well, as all of you may have known by now, BG has resigned from Dayton to take the reins at Georgia Tech. I had a feeling this was coming after the Flyers struggled to a 23-12 season this year. Hearing that the meeting with the players was emotional, brought back memories when Henry Stolly informed the Lehman Varsity Boys team that he was resigning to take a teaching job in Bellefontaine in 1998. I remember that meeting, it was a difficult one.

Kentucky Back In the Final Four Baby, Yeah

I am so happy for John Calipari and the players at Kentucky. It’s been too long with out a Final Four. Guys like Teyshaun Prince, Keith Bogans, Marquis Estill, Cliff Hawkins, Gerald Fitch, Erik Daniels, Chuck Hayes, Patrick Patterson, Kelena Azubuke, Rajon Rondo, Patrick Sparks are enjoying the moment and happy for the Cats.  The 13 year draught and frustration is over baby.

On this day six years ago

My family and I were at Indian Lake watching basketball. Kentucky was playing Michigan State for the final spot in the final four in St. Louis and I have not cheered all that hard for UK all season. Kentucky was being out played in the second half by Sparty, they were down 6 late and with time winding down, Patrick Sparks etched his name into Kentucky basketball lore as this last second three sent the game into overtime. I was jumping around like crazy. Michigan State would prevail in double overtime. I was at one point glad that Kentucky did make the 2005 Final four, but now it does not bother me.

On this date in NCAA Tournament History

Six years ago, Illionis played Arizona in the Chicago regional championship, which is called the Midwest Regional. Arizona was leading by 15 with four minutes to play, but Illionis, led by Deron Williams, Luther Head and Dee Brown, fought back to tie the game and force overtime. Illionis would complete the comeback in Overtime, winning 92-91. My Dad, Rick and I were in our basement watching that game, Rick was going crazy, he was super excited about the Illini victory.

Five years ago, George Mason shocked the world, by defeating the #1 seed in the East Regional, UCONN, 86-84 in overtime. "MY GEORGE, THE DREAM IS ALIVE".

GO BIG BLUE BABY

KENTUCKY IS BACK BABY. AFTER  13 YEARS OF NOT PULLING OFF A MAJOR UPSET IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT, KENTUCKY DID SOMETHING THAT WAS LAST DONE, TUBBY SMITH'S FIRST SEASON. I was rooting for Kentucky, even though I had ohio state winning the game. I wanted to see Kentucky win the game because they were due big time. I dont think they can beat North Carolina, UNC is playing pretty good ball.

Ohio State is currently, what Kentucky used to be

Ohio State is playing its best basketball since the 2007 season. They are the best team in the Country. Kentucky on the other hand, has not been to a final four, since 1998, my sophomore year at Lehman. Kentucky has not been the same since Rick Pitino left after the 1997 season. Kentucky has made the elite eight four times since 1999, losing them all. Tubby Smith did a great job in Lexington while he was there, however, he could not get his players ( the players he recruited) past the elite eight.

Ohio State is playing in the regionals for the 4th time since 1991. Randy Ayers had a  fantastic team in 1992 led by Jim Jackson, Mark Baker, Lawarence Funderburke, Chris Jent and Alex Brown. But the Fab Five of Michigan were too much. The 1999 team was a "Cinderella", Sconnie Penn, Michael Redd, Ken Johnson, Brian Brown, Jason Singleton.

It would be nice to see Kentucky end their final four drought, but I dont see it happening this year. I feel for guys like Teyshaun Prince, Keith Bogans, Chuck Hayes, Patrick Sparks ( more on these two shortly), Gerald Fitch, Cliff Hawkins, Patrick Patterson. Some great Kentucky players who never had the opportunity to play in a Final Four. Sparks and Hayes would have if Rajon Rondo could get a shot off in the first overtime six years ago, but Michigan State prevailed and If Keith Bogans does not sprain his ankle in 2003 against Wisconsin, Kentucky  wins the National Championship in 2003.

On this date in NCAA Tournament History

On this day in 2005, Michigan State, pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the tournament, beating Duke in the regional semis in Austin. It was Tom Izzo's first ever victory over Coach K and Duke. Michigan State would advance to the elite eight to play the rival Kentucky.  Also that night, North Carolina survived a scare from Villanova in Syracuse. I remember sitting at home that night with Rick, Dad and my friend, Brent.

On this day in 2006, LSU ( Louisana State University) defeated Texas in overtime and UCLA defeated Memphis 50-45, in a defensive struggle to advance to the 2006 Final Four in Indianapolis. It would be the first final four in 26 years without a #1 seed.

At this time 15, 10 and 5 years ago in NCAA Tournament History

15 years ago at this time in the NCAA Tournament, Mississippi State, led by Dante Jones and Erik Dampier, shocked america by defeating the #1 seed in the Midwest region UCONN and ending the College Career of Ray Allen. The 1996 Final Four, featured the Bulldogs, Syracuse, UMASS and Kentucky.

10 years ago at this time, The biggest upset in the regionals took place in Philly, Southern Cal, led by Sam Clancy and David Bluthenthal, stunned the #2 seed and my then Favorite team Kentucky, 80-76. Kentucky did not play that well all night, they did not play with any heart to me that night. Clancy and Bluthenthal put a Collar on Teyshaun Prince, holding him to 6 points that night. If it was not for the play of Keith Bogans, Jason Parker and senior Saul Smith, Kentucky probably would have been blown out that night. The biggest story of the 2001 tournament was the play of the Arizona Wildcats. Playing for their coach Lute Olsen, who was going through a difficult time with the passing of his wife. The Wildcats made it all the way to the Title game, losing to Duke.

5 years ago at this time, George Mason was making major headlines with their two upset victories. But one of the most memorable moments happened in the West Regional Semis when UCLA came back to beat Gonzaga. LSU beating Duke and ending the career of JJ Redick.

About this time five years ago..

It was about this time five years ago, that the legend of George Mason basketball was born in Dayton, Ohio. I got the opportunity to watch their two victories in Dayton. The Patriots beat Michigan State 65-55 on Friday and two days later, beat defending National Champion North Carolina 65-60. Out of the eight schools that came to UD that weekend, along with Ohio State, George Mason brought a great fan base. Their fans were loud and passionate about basketball that weekend.

Dayton Back in the Altantic 10 Championship Game

The Dayton Flyers are back in the Atlantic 10 Championship game for the first time since 2004, Brian Gregory's first year and also the senior year in college  for alot of my friends from High School. This team has definately shown the "heart of a champion". They have had their ups and downs, but I love the toughness that this team has shown in the last week. There is no quit in a Brian Gregory team. I remember two years ago when they played Kansas in the second round and the could not make a shot but the one thing I remembered from that game, is that they did not hang their head and did not get frustrated, they kept playing. It would be awesome to see Dayton take home the A 10 crown, but to do it, they have to get by either Temple or Richmond.

Lehman comes up short, again

Well, Lehman played in the district championship game for the five time in seven years and once again, came up short. They lost by 4 to Franklin-Monroe in a hard-fought game.

March Madness

March Madness is the time where legends are born, where basketball players make plays that become memories for a long time. Over the last twenty years, we have seen some great moments during March Madness. Small Schools clinch their first ever Conference Championship and make it to their first NCAA Tournament.  Duke’s 4 National Championships, the 20 year anniversary of their 1st in 1991 and the 10 year anniversary of their 3rd in 2001. The Fab Five of Michigan, The last Final Four Most Outstanding Player not to get drafted by the NBA, Donald Williams; North Carolina 1993, Dean Smith breaking Adolph Rupp’s record for most career wins, Mike Bibby becoming the first Freshmen point guard to lead his team to a National Championship; 1997. The legend that is George Mason University was born in 2006, when they beat three of the decades National Champions in their run to Indianapolis, including Michigan State and North Carolina at Dayton in 2006. 2006 was also the first year since 1980 ( I googled it) that featured a Final Four with out  a #1 seed. The Big Ten Conference had Final Four teams in a four year stretch from 1999-2002, The Big East Conference won National Championships in 1999, 2003 and 2004, The ACC and Big Ten Conference would oppose one another in the title game in 1992, 1993, 2002, 2005, 2009, with the ACC coming out on top in all five games. The Southeastern Conference had two teams in the Final Four in 1996 and 2006 when Erik Dampier and Dante Jones led Mississippi State on a magical ride to the Final Four in 1996, beating the #1 seed UCONN in the regional semis and beating # 2 Seed Cincinnati in the elite eight, oh I forgot to mention that the Bulldogs shocked #1 ranked Kentucky in the SEC Championship game that season as well and Glen Davis and Tryus Thomas lead LSU to the Final Four beating # 1 seed Duke and ending the college career of perhaps the greatest college basketball player to never win a National Championship, JJ Redick and then beating #2 seed Texas. Xavier University would win four games in a four day span to win the Atlantic 10 tournament and reach the NCAA tournament in 2004 and 2006 as the legend of Stanley Burrell was born in 2006. Georgia winning three games in a 48 hour span to make the NCAA Tournament in 2008, giving Xavier all they can handle in the first round. Oh, who could forget Gerry McNamara leading Syracuse on a magical ride to the 2006 Big East Tournament Championship. The Duke Blue Devils and Florida Gator’s become the first teams since the John Wooden led UCLA Bruins in the 1970’s to win back to back championships. Michigan State would give a state and an economy something to cheer for in 2009 as they went on a magical ride to the National Championship Game, bowing out to North Carolina. March Madness would feature some memorable games during the last 10 years: Illinois vs Arizona; 2005, Duke vs Xavier 2004; Gonzaga vs Arizona; 2003, Kentucky vs Tulsa; 2002 ( Teyshaun Prince, 41 points), Ohio State vs Tennessee ( 2007), Buckeyes overcome second half deficit, Michigan State vs Kentucky, 2005, Duke vs Maryland 2001, Duke overcomes 22 point 1st half deficit ( no lead was safe against the 2001 Blue Devils), Xavier vs West Virginia 2008 ( the legend of BJ Raymond was born), Kansas vs Davidson 2008 ( the legend of Stephen Curry was born), Kansas vs Memphis, 2008 National title game, Duke vs Butler 2010 National Title game, Xavier vs Kansas State 2010, Kansas Vs Arizona, 2003, Bucknell vs Kansas 2005, Vermont vs Syracuse 2005, West Virginia vs Wake Forest 2005; Mountaineers end College Career of Chris Paul,  Ohio State vs Xavier 2007, Ohio State vs Siena 2009, Ohio Vs Georgetown; 2010 Murray State vs Vandy, 2010, Maryland vs UNC Wilmington (Drew Nicholas saves the defending champs), Michigan State vs Maryland 2010; Korie Lucious 3 propels Sparty to second straight Final Four. Missouri’s run to the Elite Eight as a 11 seed in 2002, West Virginia’s run to the Elite Eight in 2005, Northern Iowa’s surprising run to the sweet 16 in 2010, Temple’s exciting run to the Elite Eight in 2001 as a 11 seed.  I can go on and on. March Madness has also seen its share of heroes as well: Scottie Reynold’s ( 2009 Villanova), Sean May, Raymond Felton ( 2005 North Carolina), Romain Soto, Dedrick Finn, Lionel Chalmers, Justin Doleman ( 2004 Xavier), Kallin Lucas, Raymar Morgan, Korie Lucious ( Michigan State 2009, 2010), Carmelo Anthony, Gerry McNamara, Josh Pace ( Syracuse 2003), Will Bynum, BJ Elder ( Georgia Tech, 2004), Gordon Hayward, Matt Howard ( Butler, 2010), Jon Scheyer, Kyle Singler, Nolan Smith (Duke 2010), Joakim Noah, Al Horford, Lee Humphries ( Florida 2006-2007), Richard Jefferson, Loren Woods, Michael Wright ( Arizona 2001), Kyle Hornsby, Dane Fife, Jared Jeffries, (Indiana, 2002), Tyler Hanbourgh, Ty Lawson, Wayne Ellington, Danny Green ( 2009 North Carolina) and who could forget the legends of Sam Clancy and David Bluthenthal; can’t think of better reasons not to be a fan of Southern California Basketball, USC 2001, who helped the Trojan’s end Kentucky’s season in 2001 and made Tayshaun Prince look like a “fool and on drugs” that very night and It also featured the last #15 seed to beat a #2 seed, Hampton beat Iowa State in 2001, as the Cyclones could not recover from their melt down in 2000 and #16 seed Holy Cross had #1 seed Kansas on the ropes in 2002, before the Jayhawks prevailed by 11. Holy Cross put a scare into Kentucky’s 2001 tournament as a #15 seed before the Cat’s prevailed by 5. March Madness would also feature some of the best all around teams to win the National Championship: Kentucky 1996, four of the five starters were drafted by the NBA, (Point guard Anthony Epps was not), Duke 2001, One of three best starting five’s to win the Championship, All five were drafted by the NBA, North Carolina, 2005, Sean May, Raymond Felton, Rashad McCant’s, Jawad Williams, Marvin Williams, North Carolina, 2009, Tyler Hansbourgh, Ty Lawson, Wayne Ellington, Danny Green, Ed Davis, all five on both teams were NBA draft picks and two outstanding teams to win National Championships. The Final Four has featured some memorable Cinderella story’s as well. 2006: LSU and George Mason, 2010, Butler, who was a half court heave from winning the National Championship, 1997 Arizona, a team many thought would not make it to the Final Four, let alone beat three #1 seeds. 2000 featured 2 #8 seeded teams, Wisconsin and North Carolina, both bowing out to ensuing National Champions. 2009, Villanova, thanks to Scottie Reynold’s runner in the lane in the Elite Eight, 2005, Louisville and Michigan State #4 and 5 seed’s, 2002 Indiana, a team that gave the Hoosier State something to be proud of once again. 2008 saw all four #1 seeds make it to the Final Four.  Duke University, the last team to play in three National Championship Games in a four year span; 1991-94. University of Kentucky making it to five straight Elite Eight’s from 1995-99 and the last program to appear in three straight National Championship Game’s. March Madness would also feature some memorable sound bites, but none more memorable then Jim Boeheim’s “10 f---ing games this year” and Roy Williams “I can get a you know what about North Carolina right now”.

March Madness is a time when college basketball legends are born. It’s a time when basketball memories are etched into basketball lore and the record books. Its what makes sports fun and exciting to watch.

At this time 15 and 5 years ago: Big East Conference Tournament

I was watching today's Georgetown UCONN Big East Tournament Game and the commentator was saying that it was the 15 year Anniversary of the UCONN Georgetown Final when Ray Allen made the winning shot over Allen Iverson. I remember sitting in this very basement watching that game by myself.

It was at this same time five years ago when Gerry McNamara single handedly led Syracuse to the Big East Tournament Championship in one of the most memorable Four game run's in Conference Tournament History.

The Best Basketball Coach to never coach at the Varsity Level

I’ve been around for 29 years. I’ve been to quite a few high school basketball games during that time span and seen some outstanding coaches guide their teams during the course of a long season. Guys like Doug Hughes, former Botkins Basketball coach who guided the Trojan’s to the 1999 Regional Finals and the 2001 Regional Semis. Paul Bremigan, Russia Head Coach who guided the Raiders to the 2002 State Finals, the 1995 District Championship, the 2006 District Championship. John Willoughby, Houston Basketball Coach, who coached guys like Bryan Olding, Doug Ernst, Brandon Hughes, RJ Meier. Willoughby lead Houston to three straight District Championships from 2006-2008, The 1990 Regional Finals. Jason Shatto, who led Ft. Loramie to the 2003 Regional Finals, and a #1 ranking in Ohio in 2004, Mike Lee, Minster Head Coach, led the Wildcats to the Regional Finals in 1998. Mike Piatt, former Lehman Coach who lead the Cavaliers to the District Championship Game in 2005 for the first time in 25 years, the District Championship Game in 2007 with an outstanding 18-5 record, including a 14 game winning streak and their first winning season in 2006 since Henry Stolly led the Cavaliers to a 13-7 season in the 1994-95 season. All of these coaches had outstanding players and teams. However there is one man I know, who would have been an outstanding coach at the Varsity Level, even though he never took the reins of a basketball program…

My Dad, Ken Schlater is the CEO of Area Energy and Electric. He is the founder of one of the finest Electrical Contracting business’s in the Midwest.  He may be one of the most successful business men in this area; however his passion for basketball and love for the sport is amazing in itself. He loves going to watch the University of Dayton play and while watching the games, he would point out what offense’s the team or their opponents would run. He is also a die-hard fan of the Boston Celtics.

In the 1970’s, my Dad was on Jerry Delong’s staff at Lehman. He was the Freshman Head Coach of the 1970-71 team that went 15-1. His best team would come a few years later in 1974-75. He coached the Junior Varsity Squad to an undefeated record of 16-0. That team had some outstanding players on that squad: Craig Reier, Fred Drapp, Bob Cianciolo, and Mark Geise, to name a few. My Dad one time told me that Craig Reier was one of the best players he ever coached.  Fast forward to the 1990’s. Then Lehman Coach, Ron Burgel, brought my Dad aboard for the 1991-92 season as Varsity Assistant Coach. Even though that Lehman’s Record was not all that great during the two years my Dad was helping out, he still enjoying what he was doing. It was during the 1992-93 season when Lehman played Kenton Ridge in the tournament at Vandalia High School. Lehman was favored to win the game and it was a hard fought game. The Cougars won on a last second 3 point shot. In the locker room after the game, my Dad was devastated; he pounded his hands on the bathroom stall doors and was frustrated with the defeat.

My Dad took a few years off of coaching then returned to the sideline to coach the eighth grade Holy Angels boys’ team in the 1995-96 season. That was a fun group to be around. The team featured the likes of Tony Henning, Jamie Westerheide, Justin Frantz, Dave Hodapp, Ryan Ratermann, Matt Zimmerman, Anthony Amiewalen, Todd Barhorst, Matt Bowman, Brad Graver, Myself, Kyle Henson, Joe Schmeising, Jake Sinclair and Beau Sweigart. The team went 5-10, but Dad, along with Mike and Kevin Behr made the season fun. Whether it was his diamond press, black line drill, figure 8’s, motion, flex, open post offenses, Dad made the 1995-96 season a fun filled time. Practices were fun; he rarely ever yelled at any of us, he made us believe that we could achieve our potential. He prepared us for the High School level. “Dad was a basketball coach who cared so much about his players safety, during one practice, I believe it was on a Saturday Morning, Ryan Ratermann sprained his ankle pretty good and he asked Matt Bowman and I to go to the nearest grocery store (Liberty Cardinal), to get a bag of ice and a ankle brace, because we did not have that stuff at the time” Luke Schlater, “That’s the kind of person he was when he was a basketball coach”.
Two years after the 1995-96 season, my Dad took the assistant varsity coaching position at Lehman. Henry Stolly was at the helm for the Cavaliers in his fourth and final season. It was a young team during the 1997-98 campaign. The team featured Doug DeMange, Joe Arnold, Matt Graver, Tommy Middleton, Kyle Goubeaux, Bryan Tobe, Eric Hewitt, Ben Kohlhorst, Tony Cianciolo and Ryan Ratermann. The team struggled to a 4-17 record. The high light of the season came at New Knoxville when Dad argued with the referee over a bad call and got T’ed up.  A few months after the 1998 season, Henry Stolly resigned. It was a tough moment for Lehman’s basketball team, with three returning starters coming back; Lehman needed a coach for the following season. By the time the Findlay Summer Camp approached, Dad decided to coach the team at Findlay in June of 1998. The team did not disappoint. Winning the tournament championship that Sunday against Shelby County powerhouse Houston in a thriller thanks to Tony Cianciolo’s late basket and Ryan Ratermann’s buzzer beater put back lay-up. Even though I did not play on the team that weekend, I was apart of it as the Assistant Coach as a soon-to-be junior. The team that weekend featured: Eric Hewitt, Bryan Tobe, Tommy Middleton, Kyle Goubeaux, Ben Kohlhorst, Sam Mikolajewski, Ryan Ratermann, Tony Cianciolo, Tony Staley, Jake Sinclair and Matt Hare. Days after the Findlay tournament, My Dad was offered the Varsity Head Coaching position at Lehman. After a few days of giving it some thought and being the “then” President of Area Energy and Electric, he turned it down.  Growing up, My Dad would always tell me, that if he ever coached a Varsity High School team, he would want for me to be his Assistant.

Weeks after turning down the Varsity Head Coaching position, Lehman Welcomed Lima Native Jerry Fries as there next Basketball Coach. Dad stayed aboard and was the Junior Varsity. Along with Jerry Fries and my Dad, the Coaching Staff included 1991 Lehman Grad, Brad Barhorst and Tom Middleton, who was a successful freshmen coach.  The 1998-99 Junior Varsity Squad included the likes of Jimmy Dembski, Mitch Geise, Matt Hare, Matt Wyan, Brad Hampshire, Matt Gibbs, Matt Sargeant, Jason Hoying, Bill Mertz, Joe Schmeising, Jake Sinclair, and Derrick Orlik. The JV squad captured the Southwestern Rivers Conference crown that year. The Varsity Squad went 10-11, losing a heartbreaker to Greenview, 42-39 in the first game of the tournament. The varsity team featured: Eric Hewitt, Bryan Tobe, Tommy Middleton, Kyle Goubeaux, Ben Kohlhorst, Sam Mikolajewski, Ryan Ratermann, Tony Cianciolo, Tony Staley, Jake Sinclair, Matt Hare and Derrick Orlik. “He always had a way to motivate me and push me to be better. I came to the bench during a timeout and sat down with my head down. He use to wear the area energy and electric ring with the initials AEE that must have been a little too big. It had flipped around on his finger with the AEE facing down. He came over to me told me to get my head out of my ass and smacked the back of my head. When I felt the back of my head I had some blood and hair on my hand. His ring had put a small cut in my head. I couldn't have cared less at the time about the cut as he was right. Coach Schlater is one of my favorite coaches I have ever played for; you always knew where you stood and how much he cared for the players and team. I think he is one of those rare coaches the players want to play hard and win for him as much as themselves.  I feel very fortunate he was an assistant coach my junior and senior year. It wouldn't have been the same without him”. (Tommy Middleton; LCHS Class of 1999)To tell you the truth, we were better than a 10 win team in the 1998-99 season. If my Dad was coaching the varsity team that year, we would have won the District Championship that year. The next year, my Dad coached the JV team to a successful season and was a part of an outstanding Varsity team that won 11 games and advanced the Sectional Championship game, bowing out to eventual Regional Semi-Finalist Ft. Loramie 58-37. The Varsity team included Ryan Ratermann, Sam Mikolawjewski, Dave Hodapp, Jake Sinclair, Tony Cianciolo, Tony Staley, Luke Schlater, Matt Sargeant, Derrick Orlik, Bill Mertz, Brad Hampshire, Jimmy Dembski, Tom Hartings. The JV team featured: Jimmy Dembski, Nick Caulfield, Nick Johnston, Patrick Urbanc, Tom Hartings, Peter Henne, Matt Sargeant and Matt Gibbs and AJ Jutte. “He gave me the nickname Hondo for Havlicek, because I could play all five positions, Great coach, I enjoyed playing for Coach Schlater”, Brad Hampshire; LCHS Class of 2001. “He was a great coach who helped us get better”, Tony Cianciolo, LCHS Class of 2000, “He was the best coach I have ever been around” Matt Sargeant; LCHS Class of 2001
The next year, 2000-01, would be the final year My Dad would coach High School basketball. He was the coach of a young Junior Varsity team at Lehman. The team included Ryan Shaffer, Matt Zimmerman, Adam Cisco, Chip Thompson, Nic Staley, JP Sustrich, Tony Thoma, Kevin Davey, Brian Drapp, Tony Reier, Andy Ratermann, Sean Rank. The team struggled that year, and lost three of its final four games. It was during that season that one of the games featured a moment when my Dad whistled out instructions to his team and play stopped, no one knew what was going on.  I remember being at My Dad’s last JV game, on Saturday February 17, 2001, I was the only one of my immediate family there that night. I am still disappointed in my Mom that she did not come that night. I even tried to get my uncle Bill to come along with my cousin Peter, but both declined. I guess the “last game” did not mean anything to anyone other than me. Ryan Shaffer cried in the locker room after the game, hugged and thanked him for a wonderful season. “Ken had the respect of his players and he always wanted them to play hard, regardless of the result”, Jim Schlater; Ken’s brother. “My brother was a outstanding coach, the kids enjoyed playing for him and it was fun watching him coach the JV team while I was the JV cheerleader”, Sharon Rittenhouse; Ken’s Sister.

Just a year later, Jerry Fries resigned. Lehman was looking for a basketball coach and my Dad considered applying for the job. It would have been a one year process for him. Being the senior year for guys like Justin Seger, Andy Ratermann, Andy Malarkey, Nic Staley, I told Dad, that this would be the best chance to do something fun and that you would remember for the remainder of your life. Dad told me, “this isn’t the last”. Mike Piatt took the reigns of the Lehman job; the team went 10-11, just like it did in Jerry Fries first year. Who knows what would have happened if My Dad took the job that year.  I was the administrative assistant and Freshmen Assistant that year.
Being 62 years old, it’s pretty set in stone that my Dad will most likely never stroll the sidelines on a basketball court again. In the last 10 years that I have gone to basketball games with him, I think he enjoys being a fan. However, in the first few years after he resigned as a coach, I had the sense that My Dad wanted to get back on the sideline and coach again. I had the sense that he missed teaching younger kids the fundamentals and how to play the right way and missed coaching the sport that he loved. From time to time, he has wanted to try to give the University of Dayton Coaches some of his plays or pointers on things.  To me, my Dad, Ken Schlater, is the best basketball coach to never coach at the Varsity Level of High School basketball. Just think how better the 1998-99 team would have been, the 2002-03 Lehman team would have been if Ken Schlater was the Boys Basketball coach. Lehman would have won the District in 1999 if my Dad was coaching that team.  In 2003, he was considering applying for the Lehman girls’ job after the dismissal of Mike Greve, but turned it down. In 2006, Emily Seger tried to get him to coach the Lehman Girls team in 2007, but to no avail.
